Cairo reports Israel attacked a Lebanese refugee camp near the border and downed a commercial airliner killing 106 aboard from eight countries as Egypt moved toward peace. The sequence unsettled Israel’s image as a peace loving state.
Cairo and Tel Aviv officials reacted to the Libyan Boeing 727 crash over the Suez Canal region. Egypt criticized Israel as world opinion condemned the attack while Israel outlined ex gratia payments to victims’ families and denied international liability. The cabinet noted no call for an independent inquiry.
Walter Junior Bailey, 21, of Kimballton Virginia, was killed in a single vehicle crash on a rural Giles County road Sunday. Police say his car left the road, crossed a field, and overturned after striking a ditchline. he died at the scene.
National wire reports say the Israeli government will provide payments to families affected by the Libyan airline disaster. The announcement followed other international updates on postwar relief and casualty support.
The Nixon administration plans a Monday reveal of a flexible wage standard to replace the 5.5 percent guideline in effect since 1971.
