U S infantrymen repelled a 3 1 2 hour Viet Cong assault in the jungle 30 miles north of Saigon. The battle left 89 Viet Cong dead and 11 captured while U S casualties were reported as scattered. American units posted beyond the perimeter suffered hits but overall losses were light.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey told Congress on his trip to Asia that American and South Vietnamese forces are turning the tide of battle though no quick solution is in sight. He said restrained optimism and a methodical forward movement now guide U.S. policy, tying military actions to a drive for a better life for the people of South Vietnam.
In Traffic and Ordinance Court Detroit Patrolman James Brodie testifies about go go dancer Karen Davidson in a hearing over a vulgar dance charge against Laronde Lounge owner Henry Roman. Karen showcases dances to illustrate less suggestive dancing while Brodie struggles to justify the officer’s concerns.
Lurleen Wallace, wife of Gov. George Wallace, announced she will seek the Democratic nomination for governor in Alabama as a stand in candidate for her husband who cannot seek re election. He predicted she will win and pledged use of no state funds or facilities in the campaign.
The Virginia Senate moves a permanent cigarette tax measure toward floor action with a three percent rate and a one percent local option for cities and counties. A fresh storm dropped about six inches of snow in the Virginia area on Thursday while the Weather Bureau forecast little additional accumulation by Friday morning. Washington AP The Defense Department reports 97 more U S service members killed in Viet Nam since Jan 1 1961 raising the battle death total to 2 205 for the period. Wounded increased by 435 to 10 725 while current missing fell by two to 160.
London report says Prime Minister Harold Wilson rejected a Soviet plan to exchange jailed Briton Gerald Brooke for American spies Morris and Lola Kroger serving 20 years in Britain. The exchange offer came through diplomatic channels and Wilson had sought Brooke’s release as executive clemency.
In Richmond the House General Laws Committee heard advocates for daylight time uniformity in Virginia. Frost urges April to October daylight time except the southwestern tip, while Richardson favors year round standard time. McMath proposes a shorter daylight period starting April and ending after Labor Day. Chamber and hotel groups back Frost. The panel expects to revisit early next week.
Michael Roberts ten was strangled when entangled in a rope swing near his home in Pine Grove Wetzel County West Virginia authorities said the boy was dead when his parents James and Mrs Roberts found him on Wednesday
In Richmond Virginia the House General Laws Committee approved a bill to permit beer advertising on billboards despite objections about promoting alcohol. Delegate Junie Bradshaw urged allowing attractive imagery on billboards noting beer ads appear in other media.
