Hatfield McCoy Trail System posts record 65,000 permits in 2020
Governor Jim Justice praised the Hatfield McCoy Regional Recreation Authority for a record year with almost 65,000 permits sold, the highest in the system's 20 years of growth. Despite an eight week COVID closure, 2020 saw a 15 percent rise in permits and 8,500+ new riders, with over 80 percent of sales to non residents.

Virus death toll in Mercer reaches 108 in tally
Mercer County reports four new COVID-19 deaths Tuesday raising the county total to 108. The DHHR listed victims as a 60-year-old woman a 79-year-old man a 103-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman. Kanawha County leads with 280 deaths while Wood County added another virus death in McDowell County.

Dilapidated Building Ordinance Moves To Reading
Mercer County commissioners unanimously approved the first reading of the Abandoned and Dilapidated Building Ordinance. Commissioner Greg Puckett read the 18 page proposed measure during a special meeting conducted via Zoom and Facebook Live. The ordinance is available for public reading on the county’s site.

Goodwill to Open Store Beside Gabe’s in Bluefield
Goodwill Industries will locate in the former Kmart beside Gabe's on Cumberland Road, occupying about 17,000 square feet co-located with Gabe's. The Bluefield site aims to open in late spring or early summer, with about 40 employees and training programs offered. Gabe's, occupying 70,000 square feet, announced a March 27 opening for its own store in the same former Kmart building, with around 75 hires expected.
