An attempted safe-cracking at the Western Union offices on Commerce Street failed early yesterday. Police say a boy likely forced entry through a side door, battered the dial, and bent a bolt to reach the safe, which reportedly held a large sum of money.
Bluefield chamber officials announced that the city will participate in the annual United States Chamber of Commerce health contest. Dr J B Blaydes led health work for state blind school students in Romney as part of the entry. Deadline is March 1 with results announced in spring.
Second quarterly conference will be held February 20 to March 1 at several Methodist churches led by Rev C. Lundy and others. An all day session at Henwood Park focuses on Sunday school and sermons with talks on missions, leadership training, and church finances.
Rites for Mrs. Alice O'Leary longtime Bluefield resident who died Tuesday at Little Sitar Home in Richmond will be held at 1 p m today at Ve Maine Funeral Home in Alexandria Virginia The deceased is survived by George O'Leary her only son She will be buried beside Ivebard, former real estate man of this city
Thursday night reports claimed T. H. Stanger in Coopure had his home burned down. The Daily Telegraph clarified the blaze was at a small store near the Stanger family, owned by J. W. Priksan, with only the small structure destroyed and no other property damaged.
Jack Starling, colored, was fined 104 dollars and sentenced to thirty days in the city jail after being found guilty of possessing three gallons of whiskey. He was arrested Thursday night on Scott Street by petty police.

Mrs Allie Darnell widow of Te Darnell and longtime Bluefield resident died yesterday at 3 pm at her daughter Mrs Mary Biggs home 221 Union Street from a heart attack. Native of Giles County she moved to Bluefield with her husband during railroad construction era and was active in business and church circles. Survived by two daughters Mrs Haye and Miss Birdie Darnell and a sister and brothers with funeral planned Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church followed by Monte Vista Cemetery. Active pallbearers listed.
A death notice reports the passing of a local man in Louisville. The obituary cites acknowledgment from relatives and notes the burial will occur at Lauda, Wy, with the service planned for today.
Coal production in the Toc hoviluw Tug Liverfeld field rose to 460 527 tons last week, the highest week of the calendar year. Charles Brown, 22, and Albert Blackwell, 20, arrested Thursday night in Pittsburgh for stealing a pocketbook from Miss Grace Williamson at Boy Seoul headquarters in the Municipal building. Brown confessed after initial denial and received five days in jail. Blackwell turned over to Tazewell county authorities on a charge of stealing an overcoat from a prisoner. Brown’s arrest followed a prior incident in which Blackwell was linked to the coat theft. Two bystanders in the waiting room were missing when Williamson returned.
A beacon darkened for economy’s sake may have saved Harold Daitz from grave injuries after a Newark to Richmond flight struck thick murk. Officials said the pilot attempted to land at a nearby plane-landing area, but the darkened beacon diverted the crew. Delayed injuries left him hospitalized with fractures and internal injuries.
