Dr Loyal W Tucker, a Chicago dentist, reported abducted and driven overnight in an open car after being identified by a tooth he extracted. Four men dragged him from a vehicle near his Chicago home and warned him to disappear, as he waited with bruises and ropes marks at Detroit police HQ awaiting transfer.
Sherman Bradley, Bluefield truck driver, was found guilty on circumstantial evidence in the death of J. M. Rose of Gratton Virginia. He faces one month in Tazewell county jail and a $500 fine. Bradley denied any accident near the injury site and claimed no knowledge of striking a pedestrian. Witness Joe Shepherd corroborated his alibi during the livery trip. Jury returned verdict after about ninety minutes deliberation.
Washington Feb 23 President elect Hoover's conference week fuels cabinet speculation. Names floated include Henry L. Stimeon for State Andrew Mellon for Treasury Walter F Brown for Postmaster General Charlies Adams for Navy Ray Lyman Wilbur for Interior Silas Strawn for Attorney General A J Glover for Agriculture and W N Doak for Labor. War and Commerce remain unsettled.
The senate eliminated a late amendment to the navy department bill seeking withdrawal of American marines from Nicaragua. Borah supported immediate withdrawal, signaling a rift with the administration. The vote set the stage for cruiser construction funding and ongoing naval programs.
Washington reports doubt voices rose over the confirmation prospects for Irvine L Learnot to the Court of Customs Appeals or Henry H Glaasie to the District of Columbia Supreme Court after a second Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing failed to decide.
Charleston West Virginia February 23 A license fee of 1 for fishing and 2 for hunting will be proposed in a compromise game and fish bill agreed on by house and senate committees. The bill would take effect January 1 1930 to avoid current-year disruption. The measure drawn by chairs Lilly Dueley Raine and others sets 25 percent of license revenue for forest conservation with 50000 plus 30000 federal funds. A chief forester with wide powers would be appointed and big game hunters would pay an extra 5 license fee. landowners would not pay to hunt their own property. Non rest to Page Rine.
Senate committees favor a consolidation bill designed to ease nationwide railway mergers. The measure foreshadows plans by Baltimore and Ohio and Van Swerings to expand networks while awaiting a Northern Pacific and Great Northern merger. The bill does not name any specific merger.

United States Commissioner KB C Eagle ruled there was evidence the jail brewed alcohol before January 1 but not enough to charge any individual. The case arose after a 30 day sentence ended, following remarks by Joe Adkins.
San Francisco February 23 Mrs Edna Sharp confessed to kidnapping four year old Doris Smith Murphy and absolved three co arrestees. She said she acted alone and the child was returned to her parents. Sharp released on recognizance and Bidwell named as material witness. Doris parents demand confinement for Sharp.
Washington reports an all day wrangle over prohibition as Republicans maintain the budget for enforcement at 2,727,000 while Democrats push to raise it. The house adjourned without final action on the second deficiency bill and plans to again push the larger 191,000,000 measure Monday, including a 24,000,000 prohibition amendment.
Lieut. Harry Johnson of Selfridge Field failed in a third altitude flight at Wright Field Dayton Ohio after reaching 30 000 feet. Dense haze blocked visibility forcing an emergency landing at 1 10 p m with plans to retry when weather improves.
St. Clairville Ohio Feb 23 Prosecutor George C McKelvey asked Cleveland police to raid a local club the Young Pioneers accusing it of distributing pamphlets opposing the Boy Scout movement and church and school systems. George M Togue county superintendent said he obtained a copy of the booklet and would submit it to an international conference of school superintendents in Cleveland next week.
Unidentified 45 year old blonde woman with blue eyes found slain and burned near a lonely road in New Jersey. She had a gunshot wound to the head and the body saturated with gasoline, with clues including dental bridgework and a blue automobile sighting. Police pursue a “torch murderer” link to a prior New York governess case.
Huntington February 25 The college and high school press associations of West Virginia closed their annual conventions with officer elections. The college group will meet next at Davis-Elkins College Elkins while Marshall College remains the high school association’s permanent site. Officers include A P Bryan Marshall College president Harry Ayre WV Wesleyan vice president Layne H Ford Davis Elkins secretary treasurer Eugene H Brown Marshall executive secretary and Jennings Randolph Davis Elkins advisor. High School officers include Paul Duffield Sutton president Jack Wout Fairview vice president and Miss Virginia Payne Pennsboro secretary treasurer. The convention closed with a banquet by Huntington Publishing Co.
Boston police intensified efforts to stop the fifteenth reported slashing on elevated and subway cars. The latest victim, Miss Rebecca Wingrac of Dorchester, reported clothing ripped while en route to work and could not confirm when the attack occurred.
Reports from Guanajuato say American mining engineers J. M. Underwood and C. C. Aisthorpe were killed last night after a kidnap gang seized them from Bustos mines. Mexican federal troops, led by Major Salome Araujo, pursued the group and engaged bandits, with five attackers and an alleged priest killed. The engineers were found nearby with stab wounds.
Charleston W Va Feb 28 A contract for employing prison labor on the McDowell county route was signed by the county court and state board of control with governor Gore's approval. One hundred convicts will work in two camps under guards with 25 cents daily for each prisoner employed. The county covers transportation, guards, food, shelter and clothing, and escape costs for one year with possible renewal.
John M. Lockhart, 86, Confederate veteran and Keats Ridge farmer, died Friday night from severe burns suffered when his clothing caught fire near an open grate. Survived by two brothers, a son, and nephews, with his wife predeceased him. Funeral at Lockhart Cemetery in Keats Ridge.
Charles A Lindbergh flies from Abilene Texas toward Mexico City with fiancee Anne Morrow amid secrecy about his destination. He landed at Eagle Pass on the Texas border and said he would depart at daybreak for the Mexican capital.
The Daily Telegraph and Radio Engineering Institute of New York advance Bluefield’s new WHIS station on 1420 wavelengths. The transmitter will be on the West Virginian hotel tower with studios on the twelfth floor and an antenna 75 feet above roof. The project aims to modernize broadcasting, reduce interference, and boost local prominence.
Monndeville West Virginia February 23. Contractors operating garment broom and whip shops at the state prison told the joint committee on conditions that if interstate shipments of convict labor products are barred by new legislation the state must abandon prison labor contracts within two years. They urged immediate steps while noting eight states already passed similar laws. The committee adjourned and will reconvene in Charleston next week with additional witnesses to be called.
Pittsburgh February 24 Sunday for the first time in radio history a message from the Antarctic was shared with a worldwide audience. After two way radio with Commander Richard E Byrd the expedition’s original signal was translated and radiocast in English as the wireless “100 ta 100 ta 100 ta.” The rebroadcast followed special activity by KDKA to reach listeners in the Par Norte and beyond.
