Bluefield Bridge work on track for late summer completion
Bluefield engineer Kerry Stauffer told City Board progress on the Grant Street Bridge project remains on schedule for late August or September completion. The 10 million replacement spans 312 feet between North Side and East Side to Princeton Avenue, with demolition of the old bridge finished last month and abutment work underway as piles are driven for concrete foundations. A 100 ton crane will be brought in soon to assist.

Defense unprepared hearing waived in Cantrell killing case
Nearly 20 family members of Crystal Cantrell gathered at the Mercer County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing in the 2010 murder case of Crystal Cantrell. The hearing was waived because the defense admitted lack of preparedness. Michael Wiseman, 56, of Welch, is charged with homicide. Cantrell's body was found Aug 10 2010 on Gardner Road beside the Bluestone River.

Coalition forms to plan Mitchell Stadium upgrades future use
BLUEFIELD The City of Bluefield is forming a coalition to decide future use and upgrades for Mitchell Stadium and assess regional athletic facilities. City Manager Cecil Marson said last week’s meeting included Bluefield Virginia officials Bluefield State College Bluefield University and Mercer County Schools. He noted the stadium has the area’s only artificial turf used by multiple teams and stressed a team effort to create a shared plan with Tazewell County officials to come.

Bluefield man indicted in 2021 murder tied to $10 bet
Mercer County Grand Jury indicted a Bluefield man on first degree murder after a June 2021 shooting linked to a $10 basketball game bet. Detectives said Juan Elex Tabb, 38, was found wounded in a vehicle at 585 Maple Acres Road near Princeton and transported to Princeton Community Hospital. Authorities noted Tabb claimed he disposed of a gun after the incident.
