Died Thursday in Bluefield hospital Pelby Poff 70
Pelby Poff of Rock Route 2 died after an apparent heart attack in a Bluefield hospital. A lifelong Mercer County resident and former Consolidation Coal miner, he was a UMWA member and Baptist. Survived by wife Margaret, five children, siblings, seven grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Cravens-Shires Bluewell with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Mary Elizabeth Smith 76 of Hemphill died recently and funeral services were held today at 1 p.m. in the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel Welch with Rev. Neal Dent and burial at Roselawn Memorial. Phyllis Brown Isom 80 of Bluefield also had services at 1 p.m. at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Bluefield with Elder Perry Slaughter Bishop Alvesta McCannell and Rev. Fred Saunders officiating and burial at Oakwood Cemetery Princeton. Pallbearers listed include James Rucker Rickey Isom Fred Martin Jerry Martin Stanley Martin Kent Martin and Dino Martin. Lugo's Funeral Service arranged the services.

State Police dispute Deputy Blevins statement
The Welch office of the state police said a statement by McDowell County Deputy Ron Blevins in Friday's Daily Telegraph was not true. The report described a two car collision that became five vehicles with Route 52 traffic blocked for about two and a half hours Wednesday morning. Trooper G L Woods said police did not receive a call to respond to the accident.

Post-Game Violence Reported After Northfork Williamson Game
Reports of postgame trouble between Northfork and Williamson fans circulated Friday night in McDowell County. Dispatchers said 30 to 40 people were involved in fighting and possible gunfire on Main Street near a 7-Eleven. Officers were sent, but later reports claimed the disturbance was not serious with no arrests or injuries.
