The Navy Department says no information on the Maine disaster inquiry will be released until the court members are safe on U.S. soil. Fear of Havana’s turbulent element massing to attack Americans prompts the delay. The report is not expected until the end of the week.
The Senate Committee on Military Affairs will demand passage of a bill to add two regiments of artillery. Chairman Hawley met Gen. Miles and Assistant Secretary Meiklejohn, arguing coast defenses require more men. By June 1, 139 ten and twelve inch guns and 618 mortars and smaller pieces are slated for Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The army’s artillery division lacks enough men to service the new weapons.
