Fairchild Relocates to Glen Lyn Virginia

The Fairchild International firm plans to move manufacturing and most support operations to a 111,050 square foot facility on 35 acres in Glen Lyn Giles County Virginia creating 200 to 250 jobs by 1986. Chairman Jack Fairchild says the move concentrates manufacturing engineering research development and other services at one site. Governor Baliles welcomes the investment as a boost to southwest Virginia’s economy.

Budget cuts delay Alzheimer's study in Washington

A federal health official told Congress that Gramm-Rudman March 1 cuts will trim the $10.4 million Alzheimer's research appropriation by $500,000, delaying several key projects. Harvard, USC studies paused. postdoctoral training funds sliced from 1.1 million to 822 thousand, hindering geriatric research efforts.

Area gas prices dip as outlets cut costs statewide

Personal income and spending dip in January

Americans saw a 0.1 percent drop in personal income and a 0.4 percent fall in consumer spending in January, the first declines in eight months. Analysts say unusual factors like Social Security tax changes and farm subsidy swings, plus weather, skewed results. Without these, income would have risen modestly. December had inflated income due to large farm subsidies. The report notes tax indexing and benefit increases offset some gains while a Social Security tax rise reduced others.

Brown pleads not guilty to all charges
