Senate Democrats rejected a Reagan farm relief offer and pledged to keep the Meese confirmation fight active. Leaders urged continued talks with Republicans as frustration grew over who conveyed the administration’s proposal.
Five hour inspection by the National Transportation Safety Board found no evidence of a malfunction in the small aircraft that crashed near Burkes Garden Virginia killing pilot John Peebles 23 and passenger Christopher Peebles 18. Witnesses reported fog and drizzle with poor visibility as the crash occurred between 9 and 9 30 a.m. Tuesday. The plane sliced through trees then plunged Beartown Mountain at a steep 60 degree angle. Ice on the wings could not be determined due to perishable evidence. The men were transported to Roanoke for autopsies.
Negotiations between Big Bear Mining Co and union representatives of UMWA begin March 4 5 to resolve a five month old contract dispute. John Harsanyi says a neutral meeting site is pending while Richard Trumka urges both sides to set aside obstacles and pursue a settlement. Over 65 miners have been off work since October 1 due to the expired BCOA agreement and unresolved concessions.
Betsy Sneith, pictured with newborn Sierra at a press conference last September, died Wednesday in San Diego from cardiac arrest. Twenty three Cubans who fled during the boatlift five years ago were deported as undesirable aliens under an agreement with Fidel Castro. A Boeing 727 carried them from Dobbins Air Force Base to Cuba after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals cleared the flights. The United States aims to deport 2,700 Cubans in jail or mental facilities to Cuba, with 100 to 150 per month.
