AP Special Correspondent William L. Ryan reports that Nixon's China visit yields cautious optimism. Mao meets Nixon ahead of talks with Chou En-lai, signaling openness to normalized relations while Vietnam policy remains unsettled and Taiwan remains a sensitive issue.
President Nixon held an unexpected hour long talk with Mao Tse tung at Mao's home. Officials called it frank and serious signaling possible disagreement yet both sides opened a path toward friendlier relations and normalizing ties. Nixon and Mao followed with a banquet where Nixon urged a long march toward peace without abandoning principles. Premier Chou En Lai signaled openness to normalizing relations despite deep differences.
President Nixon attended an eight course banquet in the Great Hall of the People with Premier Chou En-lai. A Chinese band played folk tunes mixed with American songs as Nixon and Kissinger toasted more than 70 Chinese leaders with mao-tai.

Last year longshoremen shut East and Gulf ports for 56 days before Nixon dispatched an injunction.
West Virginia Governor Arch A Moore Jr warns he will veto all mental health legislation unless the central facility project is moved to his desk He suspends Appalachian Regional Commission funding for mental health programs until the impasse with the legislature ends He cites dollars and a historic program while pledging to guard surplus funds for the project.
The West Virginia Senate approved a mental health bill 30 to 3 sending it to the House. It authorizes up to four regional community mental health centers and up to eight regional mental retardation facilities at sites chosen by the state mental health director. The administration had sought a central mental health center for evaluation diagnosis and rehabilitation.
Gov Arch Moore pauses all federal ARC funds for mental health facilities in the state sparking uncertainty over impact on the Southern West Virginia Regional Health Council. Council officials say they will check with Charleston while the funding cycle remains month to month.
