Col. Hubert B. Stark of the West Virginia Aeronautics Commission told a Mercer meeting last night that a hurricane ridge site was surveyed as a cost effective master airfield. A $500,000 bond election could fund the project with a federal match and a 30 year tax plan, while preserving interstate airline service.

In Elkins West Virginia February 21 escaping gas from a vented stove is suspected in the death of Rafymond Ansel Lewis 39 of Beckley and critical injuries to Kermit Lewis 41 Dean Anson Roark 26 and Joe Pallares all Beckley residents. The four men were staying in a tourist cabin for seven or eight days and were employed by an Elkins contractor.

Beckley Man Arrested In Grocery Firm Break-In
Beckley West Virginia February 21 Calvin Gilbert 27 year old Beckley resident was arrested by city police and charged with stealing a portable radio and groceries from Armstead Grocery early Sunday. Captain Millard Tyree said Gilbert confessed and awaits action by the next grand jury after a preliminary hearing. He was remanded to jail on one thousand dollars bond. Three of four break in cases from last weekend remain unresolved.

He cited 1949 wage losses of about 23 million for 22 000 miners and a 70 percent drop in coal use since 1924, with 60 days seeing 80 000 conversions to gas. Lad 16 Held In Shooting Fray At Silver Moon Grill
A 16 year old Bluefield colored boy was arrested on charges of discharging a firearm after Taft Johnson owner of the Silver Moon grill was wounded. Police said the youth fought with Johnson then returned with a .22 pistol and fired several times injuring Johnson. Johnson was treated at Bluefield Sanitarium. The youth later shot at the grill again before Buck Perry confiscated the gun and police were notified. Mrs and Misses the juvenile surrendered with their help. The front window was broken during the altercation at Reese and Pulaski streets.

Beckley Fire Blast Probed After Home Destruction
Beckley West Virginia Chief Bernard Martin announced an investigation into an early morning blast and fire that partially destroyed the residence of Mr and Mrs Clay McDaniel on South Oakwood Avenue. The blast traced to a floor furnace ripped two rear rooms from the main section. A broken gas main fueled the blaze as tenants heard a hissing noise before the explosion. Patrolman James Kidd located the sound and awakened the occupants. The blast was felt citywide with damage value not yet estimated.
