Steven Bryant Simpson Sr., 47, of Gilliam Bottom, was indicted by the McDowell County grand jury on one count of murder by dueling for a fatal April 20 2006 shoot-out in Gilliam Bottom Northfork Hollow. Dana Martin, 39, of Worth, died from injuries. The charge carries the same penalty as first degree murder and could yield life in prison if convicted. Simpson is free on bond and the case centers on an argument turning violent with both men firing weapons.
Scotty Lee Stinson 28 of Bandy Virginia pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted capital murder and other charges in the October 19 shooting of Tazewell County Deputy Eric Mullins near the Bluefields. Prosecutors say Stinson was the trigger man in the incident tied to two robberies in Claypool Hill and Richlands. Deputy Mullins, hit in the finger and vest, has recovered.
