McDowell Education Board Dismisses Goosens
McDowell County Board of Education dismissed Superintendent Robert Goosens after a marathon two day hearing. He had refused to release a settlement check totaling about 1 million dollars to non teaching personnel. The Jan 29 board decision to pay the judgment preceded the suspension. Ted Osborne opposed the dismissal citing Goosens’ stance on the check release.

Three Plead Guilty to Mail Fraud Charges
In Bluefield U S District Court three defendants pled guilty to mail fraud tied to an aecee ceaser in Mercer County in late 1981. Richard C Lewis 37 former Bo's Night Club operator and John B Whitlow 55 of Ballard admitted wrongdoing and the elder Whitlow pleaded to two counts as part of a plea bargain. Sentencing dates were set for May 8 9 with courtroom security noted and a probe by the U S Postal Service leading to a superseding true bill.

City Planners OK Nursing Home Plans
The Bluefield Planning Commission on Wednesday unanimously recommended a zoning change to permit a 60 bed nursing home in part of the old St. Luke’s Hospital on Bland Street and convert the building into a catered care retirement facility. Final action will come at a Bluefield directors meeting Tuesday evening.
