In Davenport Iowa an enormous ice jam in the Mississippi River remains wedged in a narrow channel, requiring up to one million pounds of TNT to break it. The seven mile long blockage threatens Davenport and Rock Island with two feet above flood stage as authorities move residents from riverside areas. Officials say the jam is now solid to the river bottom and dynamiting has been abandoned.
A mass of Arctic air blanketed the North on Saturday driving temperatures to 44 below in Minnesota and Wisconsin. A pickup got stranded near La Plant, South Dakota, freezing three adults and a 3 year old boy. one man survived with frozen feet after walking to a ranch. A chartered bus crash near Joliet, Illinois killed three female passengers amid widespread frigid conditions and snow.
Viet Cong mortared and fired on U S Army 1st Cavalry base camp near Saigon. About 80 mortar shells and extensive small arms fire caused only light American casualties. Seven Viet Cong bodies were counted. The camp, defended by barbed wire and a mine field, had not been attacked since September.
A 26 year old former airman, Joseph Shea of Woodhaven New York, was acquitted in Miami after six years in prison for a murder he says he did not commit. A 12 man jury found him not guilty after reconsidering evidence from a Miami Herald investigation. Shea planned to take an aircraft maintenance job in Miami and said he would celebrate with restraint.
An Asian flu outbreak hits California hard with 400000 students and 3000 teachers absent. Four million Californians may be stricken as many districts close for a Washington’s Birthday holiday. Anchorage and other areas report influenza activity and hospital beds fill in Nevada cities Reno and Las Vegas.
Navy Minister Christopher Mayhew resigned as Britain faces a government white paper on 1970s military strategy. He argued Britain cannot sustain a world role, urging drastic defense cuts and fewer commitments. Defense Secretary Denis Healey aims to trim annual defense spending to about £2 billion by 1970, shifting to naval basing in the Indian Ocean and fewer carrier forces.
Spec. 4 Daniel Fernandez of Los Lunas New Mexico has been named the soldier who jumped on a Viet Cong grenade to shield comrades during a clash about 25 miles west of Saigon. The 21 year old’s death ends a four year enlistment scheduled to end in November.

Sen Robert Kennedy urged President Johnson to seek negotiations in Vietnam based on including some Communists in a Saigon government. He warned that pushing to destroy North Vietnam could trigger major Chinese intervention and questioned resumed bombing limits. He spoke at a news conference as the Senate committee neared closed sessions and faced a Pentagon testimony plan.
U S Marines pour into Phuoc Valley northeast of Saigon in a major assault against the Viet Cong 1st Regiment. Navy jets and Air Force bombers support from the carrier Valley Forge, with reports of nine Viet Cong killed and losses for U S forces include four aircraft. An explosion in Ho Mon wounded 14 and 10 Viet Namese servicemen were among the casualties in Saigon area.
Three people died in a train car collision south of Fishersville Augusta County near Va 642 at a crossing. Frances Elizabeth Byram 27 and James Michael Byram 9 of Fishersville perished instantly while Herman Woodward Windsor 54 of Craigsville died later at Waynesboro Hospital. Police were not certain how the victims were related.
Washington AP Under secretary Wilbur J. Cohen predicted near universal doctor participation in Medicare. He cited expectations of 99.44 percent cooperation and more than 90 percent participation, noting doctors will not handle government bill payments and that reasonable charges will be set by private contractors handling program administration.
The widow of Rep Albert Thomas announced she will run for the unexpired term of her husband. Thomas, 67, served nearly 30 years in Congress before dying Tuesday in Washington from cancer.
Senator John Stennis warned that the Vietnam war could force activation of some National Guard units and Reservists. He projected up to 400,000 U S troops in the field by year end and cautioned that Communists may launch new aggressions at other global hotspots where U S interests are at stake.
