Jeff Russell 82 of Cedar Bluff Va died Friday afternoon at Stevens Clinic Welch after four days as a patient. He spent three months with his daughter in Landgraff and lived most of his life in Cedar Bluff. He left a wife two sons G A Chattanooga Tenn J M Raceland Ky a daughter Mrs Smith nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services Monday at 1 pm Cedar Bluff Methodist Church with Reverends Mustard Wormeldorf and grandchildren as flower bearers. Burial in Jones Chapel.
Funeral services are planned Monday at Hawkins chapel for Mrs Ludy Caroline Reedy 82 wife of William J Reedy who died at home after a three year illness. Burial will be at Monte Vista Park Cemetery. She was born September 16 1861 and was a Brushfork Methodist member. Surviving children listed include C E Altizer Randy Mrs Ethel Brewster Ridgeway and others. Pallbearers include Brooks Evans Jack Ward Garrard Gills Scott Blankenship Ernest Bourne and Ed Dillon. Flower bearers are National Electric Coal employees.
Four applications for enlistment in the U S navy have been received by the local navy recruiting office. L R Black of the local station announced yesterday. Those seeking enlistment are Walter E Buckland Falls Mills Va William Sandoval Alpeca Kermit M Walker Welch and Perry G Little of Giatto.
The Prim Priscilla club led by Miss Elizabeth Farley will reproduce the Beaver junior class play On Common Ground at Beaver high school likely February 28 to benefit the Service Men club. Net proceeds go to the service club. Sixty three service men from 20 states were guests yesterday, with various local donations recorded.

Secretary Knox in Washington called it a strike by carrier borne planes.
Carl H. Thompson son of Mrs Tether Thompson of Montcalm has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at his U S army station in the European theatre. Sam A. Foster petty officer second class gunner's mate has returned to his New York base after an 18 day leave visiting his parents and wife. Foster enlisted in March 1942, trained at Norfolk and Little Creek, and has completed 15 overseas trips including the North Africa invasion. He has four brothers in the Navy including Bin.
Fred L. Crigger son of Mrs. Mattie Crigger 126 N College Avenue Bluefield Virginia has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at a station in north Ireland He was inducted at Fort Custer Michigan in 1941 released for age then recalled after Pearl Harbor sent overseas in 1942 stationed at Iceland England and north Ireland Mrs Crigger has two other sons in the service Pfc Henry F Crigger Camp Maxey 2nd Pvt Raleigh M Crigger New Haven Conn Also William A Burton Lt overseas in England brother of Mrs Vance Morehead of Highland Avenue and Pfc Elliott S Burton at Fort Benning Ga Cpl Byron W Vest arrived safely in England parents Mr and Mrs C C Vest Princeton Avenue informed about his arrival.

Severe flooding in the Dry Fork region near Priday caused several thousand dollars in damage. Two bridges were washed away and two more damaged while many families evacuated late Thursday night. most residents returned by Friday though some remained out due to debris and muck. The Yukon and Bartley areas suffered the brunt as Bartley bridges were partially washed out and a new state bridge at Yukon damaged, with light traffic allowed and heavy traffic delayed until repairs. Power outages occurred in Berwind when the river flooded and reached the power house. river levels rose high enough to cover a fence at the Pocahontas company offices in Bartley.
Tech. Sgt. Glyde Lockhart of Hartwell is reported missing in action over Europe after his B 17 bomber failed to return from a mission. The loss was conveyed to his mother, Mrs. Martie Lockhart, three weeks after the incident. He is a graduate of Big Creek High School at War.

Raymond J. Funkhouser, Republican gubernatorial candidate, will visit McDowell as part of his campaign itinerary announced yesterday. He plans meetings with local supporters and delegates to discuss priorities and party platform.

John W. Foy of Glen Jean West Virginia died Friday night at his home after a heart condition. He was employed by a coal company and funeral services were held at Davy Methodist Church with burial at Saeger Memorial Cemetery. He was survived by his wife two children and siblings Wilhem Foy Thelma Bearre and Lois Knapp.
