Iwo Jima memory marks Coast Guard veteran Pedigo’s 50th tribute

Raymond Pedigo of Bluefield, a Coast Guard Seaman First Class who lied about his age to enlist in 1943, recalls the brutal Iwo Jima invasion. He and 65 other Coast Guard Iwo Jima veterans will attend Washington ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary. Pedigo carried Marines onto the beach at 7:30 a.m., observed heavy shelling, and learned only nine of the 393 Marines he ferried remained after three days. The island’s fortifications included cannons on railroad tracks hidden in tunnels, a fierce defense that made Iwo Jima a pivotal, costly objective en route to Japan.
