Tragic Wolf Creek drowning of Narrows youth Mike DeArmand
Two and a half year old Mike DeArmand, son of H. T. DeArmand and wife of Narrows, drowned while playing near Wolf Creek. Patrolman Ted Broyles recovered the body downstream near a dam as high waters widened the stream behind the DeArmand home. The child’s death follows high flood levels that washed out Wolf Creek, with the family planning to move soon. Mike was the couple’s only child.

Navy Drydocks Plane At Sea Test On Ashland
Aboard the USS Ashland in Chesapeake Bay Maryland a two engine P5M Marlin seaplane was moved into a floating drydock to test a new water base concept for naval aviation. The demonstration involved Martin engineers Navy officers and newsmen and aims to inform future PGM jet sea plane development. The Ashland a Landing Ship Dock measures 458 feet in length with a well deck 394 feet long and can flood to 12 feet depth to accommodate ships or the Marlin.

Election Murder Case In Court
A McDowell County jury began hearing the state's case against Lacy Thompson 51 of Premier charged with fatally wounding Charley Carter 38 of Premier on election day. Trooper Blevins testified Carter was shot three times May 8 with a .32 pistol and died eight days later. Special prosecutor Harry Capehart Jr. and defense counsel said self defense. Witnesses included Carter family members near the Premier polling place. Carter was shot in the hip chest and back with the final shot fired as he fell against a fence. The case was being heard before Judge I Mann Litz with proceedings continuing.

Slaying Suspect Held For Questioning In Wyoming County
