Tokyo radio reports vigorous ground fighting and air attacks beginning February 17 with motorized Japanese forces opposing American landings at Truk. Chungking radio cites ongoing action as Japanese units contest American forces in the area.
German raid drops incendiaries over Parliament Square and Westminster Hall. A fire started in Westminster Hall and burned woodwork before being extinguished, with debris scattered near Cromwell Green and the new palace between Parliament and Westminster Abbey.
The House approved and sent to the Senate on Feb 18 a bill appropriating 231 304 700 dollars for the state commerce and justice departments for the fiscal year starting July 1. Passage was by unanimous voice vote with under 100 members present.
Mrs Mary Stephenson 32 wife of Charles Stephenson of Bishop Virginia died yesterday afternoon after a long heart illness at Bluefield sanitarium She was born in England in 1912 and came to the United States as a child She leaves husband a daughter Joan at home one brother James with the U S army and one sister Mildred of Bishop Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the Bishop home with burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
Mrs Oma Brown 58 wife of Rev Charles Brown of Richlands Virginia died at home Thursday following a heart attack. Survived by six children Alvin Clayton Floyd Tommy Harvey Mable Stiltner twenty grandchildren one great grandchild two sisters and other relatives. Services at Layman’s Chapel Richlands at 2 PM conducted by Rev N H Flannery with burial in Hawkins Cemetery.
Mrs Gertrude Shrader died Wednesday night at her home in West Graham. The funeral was held at 3 PM at the West Graham Methodist church with Rev J C Spurlin officiating. Interment followed at Hill Cemetery Bluefield. Pallbearers were Clarence Tiller, Frank Wilburn, George Wilburn, George Gillespie, Frank Snell, Greever Roach. Flower bearers: Mrs Ethel Anderson, Mrs Charles Holbrook, Mrs Lewis Jackson, Mrs E T Crockett, Miss Wanda Powers, Miss Bernice Carter, Miss Marguerite Turner, Miss Rissie Stevenson.
Mrs Arlene Lesler 72 wife of Andrew Lesler Matoaka died yesterday afternoon at 2 15 of heart trouble following a three week illness. Born May 2 1872 in Washington County Virginia she had lived in Matoaka 25 years moving from Ilhowie Va. A Methodist church member she was prominent in the Matoaka area. Survived by husband six daughters Mrs Nancy Tyree Mrs Alice Hill Mrs Lonnie Blevins Mrs Harrison Parks all of Matoaka Mrs Ellen Rutherford Dott and Mrs Kyle Elliott Alisa one sister Mrs Zelfie Brevins Beeson and one brother John Rutherford Grassy Branch N. Funeral arrangements incomplete last night and the body will lie in Bailey funeral home Matoaka until services.

Pvt. Ishmeal Petty, 23, of Coalwood, died Wednesday during a parachute jump at Camp McCall North Carolina. He returned from the Panama Canal Zone last September after 23 months in service and had been with the parachute troops. Surviving are his father Walter Petty and Mrs Lois Wilkerson of Coalwood. his mother died in 1935 and a younger brother Elton died days later. Petty had belonged to the 150th Infantry when inducted, and was stationed at Camp Shelby previously.
McDowell County exceeded its Fourth War Loan quota by 1,211,000 dollars or 54 percent with total sales of 3,444,422.15 against a 2,233,400 target. Large purchases included Pocahontas Fuel company at 350,500 and Pond Creek Pocahontas at 150,000. E bond purchases lagged.

Charleston West Virginia February 18 Approximately one month is the minimum time given draft eligibles from the pre induction physical to call up for duty instead of 21 days. The 21 day rule begins from the date form 218 is mailed showing the exam report. The delay arises as papers move from induction centers to local boards and notices are issued. If examined February 21 the notice may not reach the registrant until February 24 or 25.
