Reports from Vinton Virginia indicate several women have begun pistol practice following a wave of assaults. The tally notes multiple participants and suggests a broader local mobilization for personal defense.
A Richmond Virginia report notes a ladies gun club organized in Virton Roanoke county to learn pistol use and carry in public, spurred by recent criminal assaults. Incidents include a horse grabbing and arm wrenching by a negro and a woman saved by a passerby. Members train with husbands or brothers’ pistols.
Washington reports a review of the year 1901 showing sustained expansion in U S sales abroad across many manufacturing lines. Europe worries over possible impact of U S industrial competition while Germany sees the United States as a leading seller. Also census data indicate the south rising as fast as the north with rapid growth in small towns and rural areas.
A large fire at Kellogg Sanitarium in Battle Creek Michigan on February 18th required rescuing four hundred patients. Two injuries occurred when a woman and a girl jumped from a third story window, breaking their legs. The blaze caused losses estimated in the hundreds of thousands.

William Tweed, aged fifty five and one time Tammany chief, dropped dead today in Stanford, Connecticut, from heart disease.
Charles L Tiffany, head of the renowned jewelry firm, died in New York on February 18 at age 90. He led the Tiffany & Co. business through decades of growth and became a prominent figure in American jewelry.
Vienna reports February 18 that the Tangeblatt states Miss Stone has been freed.
An estate on Mill Mountain Terrace just outside Roanoke Va offers a sixteen room house with eleven hundred fifty feet of porch on three sides. An advertisement warns that many cough syrups poison children, causing nervous weakness or death. It promotes Foley's Honey and Tar by G. H. Wade as a safe remedy for coughs, croup, and long troubles, claiming it contains no opiates or poisons.

An assignment filed in Clarksburg shows George Gilmore of Fayette county transferring options and mining rights to 14 667 acres of coal lands in Harrison and Lewis counties to Arthur Lee trustee. The deal totals about 455000 with 500 cash and 31 per acre. Governor A B White will receive payment after prior claimants and surveying costs are settled. Lee represents Senator A B Elkins and others who bought the tract.
West Virginia delegates plan to oppose a post office report favoring contracting rural free delivery, warning of loss of mail carrier appointments. The piece notes resistance to broader interstate commerce powers and mentions petitions from rural carriers, commercial groups, and support for penny postage. It ends with an advertisement for Foley's Kidney Cure.
In a letter dated February 17 1902 Radford mayor W D Vaughan refutes a Telegraph report claiming smallpox is epidemic in Radford. He states only three cases in two years, with quarantines for exposed individuals and currently one case in the city.
A Clarksburg dispatch reports Harry M. Clayton of Fairmont sold 5500 acres of Elk district coal lands to Pittsburgh capitalists. A Charleston decree orders the sale of five acres near Harper's Ferry where John Brown made his last stand at John Brown's Fort. The land, once moved to the World's Fair and then returned, owes $1,118 to Alexander Murphy in a suit against Miss Kate Field's estate.

A railroad worker described a new hospital car idea to attach to wreck trains. The car would include an operating room and many cots to treat and stabilize injured passengers and workers at the scene, potentially saving lives by avoiding delays before reaching a hospital.
