Washington February 17 The House opened a sharp vote over President Eisenhower’s lower tariff foreign trade plan with a one vote preliminary edge for administration backers. A coalition of protective tariff insurgents threatened a flood of amendments as debate focused on procedure and potential rate cuts.
The Republican National Committee unanimously selected San Francisco as the 1956 convention site amid party vows to balance values and attack communism. President Eisenhower urged Republicans to avoid portraying Democrats as soft on communism and emphasized fighting a free world against a dictator regime.
Chicago February 17 The National Pickle Packers Assn chose its man in the biggest pickle Georgi Malenkov recently deposed Russian Premier to lead the group with decisiveness and influence.
Bulletin from Taipen Formosa says Nationalist forces sank seven Communist landing craft in a sea battle early today between Nanchishan and Matsu islands northwest of Formosa. The Defense Ministry announced the clash and results as part of ongoing coastal actions.
London reports a healing fracture as Dulles speech triggers British unease over Formosa. Britain insists on limiting offshore island concessions to Chiang Kai shek forces and warns of open breach with the United States if America s stance shifts. Churchill signals potential talks with Eisenhower if the chance arises. British press notes a growing rift despite Navy and diplomatic pressures.
The Navy announced successful tests proving feasibility of fueling a seaplane from a submarine. Conducted off San Juan Puerto Rico earlier this month, the aircraft was a Martin P5M seaplane powered by a piston engine and the submarine used was the Guavina, the fleet's tanker submarine.
In Tiberias on February 17 Judge Jacob Bar Zeev ordered Mra Miriam Mahal to receive weekly bouquets from her husband for three months after he struck her with a frying pan when she challenged him about coming home late. Each bouquet must include a card reading With repentance and love.
Detroit February reports a brutal killing of 9 year old Kathleen McLaughlin found behind a Farmington Township home. A 16 year old neighbor boy was questioned after bloodstained clothing surfaced at his home. Police say he admitted stabbing and striking the child during an argument and that Kathleen was last seen with two other boys.
Union leaders shrug off objections as AFL and CIO push to merge into a single national union. They eye a mid September target with conventions in Chicago and Buffalo, and possible joint session to ratify the merger. Decisions on the merger timetable and CIO convention relocation will be decided at the CIO Executive Board meeting next Thursday.
London reports Prime Minister Churchill's government says Britain has developed the power to produce a thermonuclear weapon. A white paper claims progress in defense, with production to begin and no timeline given for Russian capabilities. The United States tested an H bomb last March and Russia claims parity.
Baltimore officials ordered an arson squad probe after a nine alarm blaze at a downtown clothing store killed six firemen. State's Attorney Sodaro questioned owner Herman E. Goldstein and salesman Louis Phillips while police questioned two of Goldstein's sons. The store had another Baltimore location that burned last June.
Secretary Dulles announced John Sherman Cooper was sworn in as ambassador to India. About 200 Cooper supporters, including Dulles and former Republican senator from Kentucky, attended the ceremony, underscoring the post as vital to world peace.

The proposal would set a $70 annual increment based on experience for 1955-56, later reduced to $64, with about one million dollars redirected to social security and distributed by county.
On a crowded 35th Street sidewalk outside Macy’s in New York two aging criminals, Sol Girsch 58 and Sam Kramer 60, fought with gun and knife. Girsch, a Dutch Schultz mob enforcer, was wounded. Kramer, the horse thief turned felon, escaped with a nicked ear and a grim remark. Police note the two men opposed for decades and refused to identify after the clash. Kramer had a 1913 horse and buggy theft and a 1924 Amex holdup attempt in his long criminal record.
Senator Wayne Morse formerly independent in Oregon changes registration to Democratic at his Eugene home. He is joined by Oregon Democratic Central Committee Chairman Howard Morgan. Morse says the move will help him serve Oregon and push a liberal legislative course with the Democrats.
Charleston reports Senate and House advances on a road reorganization proposal and a 3 percent sales tax with an April 1 effective date. The medical association opposes unified hospital plans as the legislature mulls eight health initiatives.
