A tank rupture sent a flood of molasses through Loveland Colorado delaying a kindergarten and blocking several businesses. No injuries were reported as authorities initially treated the slick as a possible chemical spill after a car slid into a ditch. A resident quipped about bringing pancakes.

In Castlewood Virginia United Mine Workers review a 49 page Pittston deal that would end a 1042 month strike across Virginia West Virginia and Kentucky If ratified Monday miners could return to work by weeks end The vote follows union leader Trumka praise and a past legal fight over $64 million in fines while both sides push toward settlement and resumption of operations.
John Kirk among 1,700 United Mine Workers members at Russell County briefing as Pittston Coal Group outlines a four year contract. The agreement promises health care improvements retirement benefits and job security with scheduling flexibility. Kirk calls it a good contract and says it will fly. Local 5737 members Biden from rain to hear terms. Charlie Keen notes terms are better than expected.
The Senate Finance Committee endorsed a plan to sell the state's retail liquor stores to help balance the 1990-91 budget. The 11-4 vote followed hours of debate with administration aides present. The bill includes a $20 million expected revenue and two amendments favoring a West Virginia bidder with a 5 percent break.
A West Virginia poll shows 65 percent do not recognize the Partnership for Progress program linked to Gov. Caperton. Only 20 percent correctly identify it with him, while small shares misidentify it as a chamber program or other unrelated initiatives. The poll also finds unemployment and development as top concerns with preference for benefits cuts over tightened state employee or welfare spending.
Delegate Rick Kephart praised Mercer County teachers for their behavior during a rally at the state Capitol while condemning the assault by some educators on the Legislature. He recalled 5,000 teachers packing the rotunda and doors, with state troopers needed for safety as the crowd grew louder.
About 35 Princeton High students were suspended Thursday after a school sanctioned protest in support of teacher salary increases went too far. Mercer County Schools official Pam Bailey said some students skipped class and caused a hall disturbance. A second protest on Friday reported no problems. Curt Barber

Bluefield City Attorney John Feuchtenberger filed a countersuit in U.S. District Court seeking contempt charges against Ronald L. Kretzer and dismissal of Kretzer's suit. The city requests more than 364000 in relief including 114873.4 in grants and 250000 in punitive damages and adds Brenda Kretzer as a defendant.
