An 18 year old Princeton man Timothy A Barr was charged with destruction of property and intoxication after his 1968 Dodge plowed into the front porch and door of a Magnolia Street house owned by Tommy St Clair. Damages to the home were about two thousand dollars. Barr was treated for minor injuries at Princeton Community Hospital. The incident occurred about 945 p.m. and was investigated by Sgt Archer and Officers Eades and Barker.
New Orleans police walked out and picketed after failed contract talks with the city. The strike risks canceling the upcoming Mardi Gras parades as National Guard and state police mobilize, with union leaders and city officials trading blame.
Deputies investigate two women suspected of bunko schemes in Beckley and Bluefield, then at Princeton K Mart where they claimed a found stash of 30,000 dollars in thousand dollar bills. They asked the victim to pay 250 dollars for taxes, but she did not pay. Police believe the pair are the same women who worked the scam earlier Friday and are not from the local area.
A 1975 Ford pickup driven by Gary S. Finley 34 of Bluefield overturned in a creek on U S Route 19 after swerving to avoid a car pulling from a drive in at King Tut's Drive-In. Finley was unhurt. no charges filed. Deputy William E. Gearhart led the investigation at about 8 45 p m.
Bluefield police report a Friday afternoon crash at Bland St and Springdale Ave injuring no one. A 1969 Pontiac driven by Charles Cookes pulled onto Bland from Springdale and hit the rear of a 1977 Chevrolet truck driven by Clarence Henderson. Officer S E Murphy investigated.
Magistrate David Pedneau heard a grand larceny dismissal for Ocal Smith of Princeton and a $500 bond release for Leonard Lafferty of Bluefield on a breaking and entering charge. Arresting trooper D N Blizzard. Magistrate Donald Hare handled guilty pleas for Alfred Ellison Camp Creek on public intoxication with 12 hours in jail and Jackie Kanode Princeton with five days. Twenty four people including Hancock County Prosecutor Robert Altomare were arraigned in federal court in Wheeling on charges tied to a WV gambling probe. Pleas were entered. pretrial motions due by March 2 with trials to follow. Altomare faces up to 50 years and fines up to 75000. The indictments stem from a January FBI state police raid on eight gambling sites in the Weirton area. Authorities recovered about 17000 in cash and gambling devices.
Huntington police found 48-year-old Robert Cheek of Logan County dead in an abandoned building near the Cabell County Jail after a prison tip from Edward Gene Frye who said he killed a man. Detectives believe Cheek died from injuries from a beating possibly five weeks prior.
Robert McKay Fanning of Fox Ridge Apartments Princeton asks the Daily Telegraph to report that he is not the Robert Fanning indicted this week by the Mercer County Circuit Court Grand Jury on possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
