A blast at a facility linked to a government program killed eight workers and injured several others. Officials described a serious industrial accident with extensive damage and ongoing investigations into the cause and safety lapses.
Four nonunion pickets were shot and wounded near the Williams Brothers mine at Junior West Virginia. Attendants said they would be released after treatment for minor wounds. The clash occurred as pickets retreated after warning gunfire from mine employees. Police noted shots appeared accidental and roving pickets later forced the closure of two Harrison county mines. Seven pickets were later arrested in Greenbrier county on related warrants.

Whitesburg Kentucky February 16 rescuers slowed efforts to reach Dewey Rose trapped two days in the Fire Chief on Co mine six miles east of Dixon City. Rose 49 and Worley Dickenson 59 were trapped after a rock fall Tuesday. Dickenson was rescued late yesterday. Ernest Bryant died at his Pound Virginia home after a heart attack. Rescue work paused for timbering and supplies. Rose’s body is thought about 20 feet from the Dickenson rescue site. Roses pony also died.
Washington reports John L. Lewis presses for guaranteed work 200 days a year as the nationwide coal strike nears its third day. Cole says proposals remain vague with hours and pension terms debated while operators resist higher costs. Four miners killed in a new field clash as strikes ripple through steel and rail industries.
The Norfolk and Western Railway will close its east end shops in Roanoke today, putting 1 900 workers out of a total 5 400 furloughed due to the coal strike. American Viscose in Roanoke cites a two week coal supply raising fears of a 3 000 person layoff if more coal cannot be secured. In Richmond the emergency fuel commission reports a 7–14 day domestic coal stock and 14–21 day industrial stock, while city manager Sherwood Reeder urges voluntary gas conservation.
In Cleburne Texas on February 16 Mrs Pauline Campbell 40 leapt into her car and rammed a Jersey bull to save her husband Percy 45. The couple were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
Eighteen police officers at the Omaha station received parking tickets while attending police school classes. Traffic inspector Ray Strong said the tickets were issued to officers whose personal cars were improperly parked near the station.
