Walla Walla Washington February 16 An observance celebrated Whitman College s semi centennial and the centennial birthday of founder Cushing Bells born in Blandford Massachusetts He and his wife aided missions to Oregon arriving at Walla Walla in 1838 He founded Whitman College in 1860 contributing 10000 of his own funds The college now spans over a dozen buildings and a 30 acre campus with Carnegie Foundation standards rivaling Harvard and other eastern universities The event drew former students public officials educators and friends of the institution as speakers praised its past and forecast a bright future

Indianapolis February 16 Louis Ostendorf owner and director of the Empire Theatre and orchestra shot and killed Italian violinist Casama at the theatre entrance. Casama, expelled from the orchestra, fired two shots into Ostendorf’s abdomen before Ostendorf wrested the revolver and killed him. Ostendorf said to be fatally wounded.
