In Charleston lawmakers hear intense testimony on strip mining with surface miners and anti mining advocates arriving by bus. Witnesses frame mining as both vital to jobs and a threat to the environment while legislators probe potential impacts of any ban.
In Charleston a joint hearing weighed bills to outlaw strip mining. J Taylor Frazier of Bluefield Supply warned abolition would devastate West Virginia coal counties, citing 483 employees and 24.6 million dollars invested by his firms. He warned of job losses if the practice ends.

West Virginia Welfare Rights Organization called Monday’s Capitol rally a success despite delays and bad weather. About 60 members from multiple counties urged 100 percent need-based welfare grants, proposing a coal severance tax and mining abolition to fund the program.
