Only a small portion of Bluefield Community fund returns have been turned in totaling 3687.50 dollars. Rev. J. W. Hobson, general director, urged solicitors to bring in more pledges as the drive aims for 27500 dollars to support six agencies for twelve months.
Allied forces under General MacArthur and Admiral Halsey pushed along the South Pacific front from Tulagi and Guadalcanal through Rendova New Georgia Choiseul and Treasury islands. Paratroops hit Choiseul then Empress Augusta Bay as Marines secured beachheads and built two airfields near Rabaul boosting 13th Air Force reach.
Barbara Ta remains in the city to accept civil service enlistments for stenographic and clerical work in Washington and Baltimore areas. Mrs Newland will be at the U S employment service office on Commerce Street from 8 30 a m to 6 p m today to accept enrollments.
Eugene Stowers Jr graduates from Lehigh University School of Engineering in Bethlehem Pa on February 20. He will promptly be assigned to active duty with the Army Ordnance Department. Captain Stowers with Army Air Forces in Miami Fla and Mrs Stowers will attend the graduation exercises and then, after a stay in New York and Philadelphia, return home.

News lists the death of E. B. Hoffman former Bluefield resident who died at his Mt Airy home yesterday afternoon. Survived by widow and two daughters Mrs Hale Yakley of Mt Airy and Mrs Banner of Greensboro. Funeral services scheduled for 10:30 tomorrow at Mt Airy First Presbyterian church.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Seagle 88 who died yesterday at her daughter's home 1004 College Ave. The service is set for 2 pm Thursday at Trinity Methodist with Rev. C G Eastwood officiating. Interment will be in Monte Vista. Survived by four daughters a son twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren two sisters and a brother.
Beaver High reports a strong effort in the Fourth War Loan drive as students converted completed stamp books into bonds. Although last night’s total included purchases from yesterday, Miss McDowell notes the campaign surpassed its goal. About 600 students helped, with 527 bonds totaling 13 175 dollars.
The Rev. Warren Carr pastor of First Baptist Princeton spoke at the Rotary club luncheon at the West Virginian hotel on Christian religion and Christ’s path as the best way. Visitors included Rotarians Carr and W Broughton Johnston and many local and military guests.
The maritime commission reported seven west bound Liberty ships sustained slight fractures in a terrific North Atlantic storm. All vessels returned to United Kingdom ports for repairs with no loss of life or cargo damage. Officials said damage was due to storm intensity, not structural defects.
Charlie Hamm of this city is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Magistrate W. W. McNeal at 10 o clock on a charge of grand larceny. He allegedly stole $20 from K. Joseph, operator of a restaurant on Bluefield Avenue Monday night and is held in the city jail pending the hearing.

The quota stood at $2,233,400 as schools observe Treasure Hunt day with stamp albums converted to bonds.
John E Stafford Jr of Berwind is named as field representative for the motor carrier division of the Public Service Commission. He will cover McDowell Mercer and Raleigh counties and will reside in Welch after March. Stafford is a former New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Co employee and a Concord College and West Virginia Business College graduate.
Funeral services for Harry Reid Walker, 59, formerly of Welch, were held yesterday afternoon from Barlow chapel in Charleston. Wallace M. Alston, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, conducted the service and interment was in Sun Set cemetery. He is survived by his widow Rachel Waldron Walker and three sisters C. W Rhodes of Charleston A. B. Manherz and W. C. Swartwood of Oakmont Pennsylvania.
Pvt. Herman Todd Suiter of Welch has been awarded the army good conduct medal. He is stationed at Camp Maxey Tex. and was among 19 soldiers in a group of 200 who received the medal.
Earl Yeager of the Welch detachment of the West Virginia state police is appointed to the U S naval reserve with the grade of lieutenant j g He will report to the naval training school at Princeton university New York He is a Morris Harvey college graduate and long time state police member Lt and Mrs Yeager welcomed a daughter.
Five colored selectees left Jaeger yesterday for Huntington for pre induction physicals. They were board 4. Those passing will be subject to call to active duty after 21 days. The board has a call for 60 colored men on February 23.
The heavy cruiser USS Pittsburgh will slide down the Bethlehem Fore River shipyard ways on Washington's Birthday in Quincy Massachusetts. Mrs Cornelius D Scully wife of the citys mayor will sponsor by breaking a champagne bottle on the bow. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox announced the launch. Unofficial lists put the class at about 13000 tons with nine inch main batteries.

Moscow reports German forces in north Russia are abandoning fortified strongpoints and moving to a continuous front line. A Tass dispatch says heavy arms are redeployed in depth to form a solid defense after Russians learned to breach hedgehogs. The Russians counter with trench assault drills and artillery backing, destroying pits as they revive after initial barrages.
An eight year old student from Garden Creek school is credited with saving two children when a house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Sparks of Oakwood burned. The child alerted neighbor Howell Geeser whose eight year old son Jack rescued the youngsters aided by George Mitchell. The house burned completely after the parents returned. Sparks works for Oakwood Smokeless Coal.
Laymen of Grundy Methodist church and Looney's Chapel in Vansant plan a Laymen's Day next Sunday. At Grundy 11 a.m. Attorney John Boggess will speak on The Church At Its Best with R. E. Williams presiding and Creed Lawless leading prayer. Evening sermon at 7:30 by Rev. Wesley F. Ledford. At Looney's Chapel 3 p.m. Fred Shortt will deliver an address.
Pfc Edward Buddy Hogston and Cpl Howard Mann have landed in England as parents are advised. Both are former Grundy high school students, sons of Mr and Mrs I E Hogston and Mr and Mrs L D Mann of Grundy and Tockland.
Pvt Truman Owens son of Mrs Ollie Owens formerly of Deel has been assigned to the RAF training command radio school at Sioux Falls Iowa. Owens is a Grundy high school graduate and an outstanding athlete. He was inducted into the service last June.
County agent S. D. Woods announces a $10 prize in 1944 for growing the most potatoes from 100 pounds of certified seed. Use sufficient fertilizer, specifically 150 pounds of 5 10 5 or 4 12 4 fertilizer per 100 pounds of seed potatoes, to maximize yield.
The administration announces progress by OPA agents in fighting racketeers. Last year gas and price control violations dominated prosecutions. In the most recent month one third of completed criminal court cases resulted in prison for violators, with others fined or placed on probation.
A 19 year old woman who gave the name Rena Devosky is a patient at Bluefield sanitarium after being found lying by the roadside near Washington street and Cumberland road Friday night. She arrived by ambulance and is reported to be in shock and exposed. Her parentage traces to Lanark Beckey, and her case includes conflicting stories about how she came to be there.
