U S wholesale prices fell 0.7 percent in January the steepest drop in three years as oil prices slid. Gasoline prices may ease 10 to 15 cents a gallon by spring with consumers feeling some relief at the pump. The January drop would imply about a 7.8 percent annual rate if sustained. Coffee prices surged 17.4 percent in January after a drought driven rise. The Labor Department index for finished goods stood at 296.2 in January.
A storm dumped six inches of snow in the two Virginias by Friday evening, with Russell County near Lebanon reporting about 20 inches by 9 p.m. Affected roads were slick and one lane traffic prevailed on major highways as crews cleared streets through the day and night. Accu Weather projected 2 to 4 more inches before the system moved on and the Virginia Department of Highways required snow tires or chains on all secondary roads in southwest Virginia.

Bluefield officials led by Fraser Miller urge Piedmont Com muter airline to restore service at Mercer County Airport. Roy Haggerty of Piedmont says management will consider it if business warrants. Christman Air Systems currently serves the airport with routes to Pittsburgh and Charlotte but faces subsidy cuts that may end operations. City manager Fred Burton notes air traffic is at a standstill while officials press on with a Charlotte visit to present a market survey.
