Driving while using cellular quadruples accident risk

A Canadian study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that talking on a cell phone while driving roughly quadruples the chance of an accident and a hands-free call is equally hazardous. The risk returns to normal after the call ends, and the finding compares to driving with a blood alcohol level at the legal limit.

No Mercy Declared as JonBenet Case Anticipates Arrest

Stormy winter forecast hits Mercer and nearby counties

The National Weather Service warned of up to 5 inches of snow with freezing rain in Mercer Monroe Summers and Tazewell counties, while McDowell and Wyoming counties face 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet turning to rain. Up to 3 inches could accumulate by nightfall in Mercer. Campbell urged caution as ice may form with temps rising this afternoon. Roads turned hazardous as snow began around 2:30 p.m. Emergency responders are on standby and shelters may open if needed.

Governor’s State of the State sparks I-73/74 confusion

Gov. Cecil Underwood’s State of the State speech mentions the Southern Coal Expressway, prompting questions whether he meant I-73/74 or the Coalfield Expressway from Beckley to Grundy. Few Sign On For Tazewell Water Project Progress Stalls

In Baptist Valley, less than 200 residents have signed up for county water, far short of the 980 user agreements needed by May 11 to avoid losing about 9.8 million in federal funds for the Greater Tazewell Regional Water Project. PSA Administrator Jim Spencer corrected a prior report that 686 had signed, saying only 180 had signed top user agreements after staff review.
