Wreckage Found of Plane Carrying SWC Officials

Wreckage found near Wimberley Texas believed to be a small plane missing since Friday carried two Southwest Conference basketball officials. Jerry Neely and Bill Horlen died in the crash. Civil Air Patrol and Ft. Sam Houston helicopter crews located two bodies after bad weather hampered searches.

Montcalm dominates Matoaka 78 60 in scholastic clash

Montcalm jumped to a 35 22 halftime lead and held on for a 78 60 victory over Matoaka. Randy Jennings led Montcalm with 27 points on 13 of 14 free throws, while Randall Basham added 23 and Mike Shrewsbury 10. Matoaka, led by Mike Davis with 17, struggled at the line converting 6 of 12. Montcalm improves to 13 1, next facing Herndon at Brushfork Armory. Matoaka drops to 8 4 and hosts Spanishburg then Oceana.

Whitewood Rally Stuns Council in CVD Clash

Whitewood roared back in the final period to beat Council 67 to 42 in Clinch Valley District action. Joe Maxwell led Whitewood with 23 points followed by Terry Maxwell with 20 and Rocky Cole 14 as the Indians improved to 11-1 in league play while Council dropped to 7-8 overall and 7-6 in the district.

Freshman Ken Labanowski scores 28 as Marshall beat VMI 88-71, despite key players out with flu. Harold Cooper scored 16 points for Davis and Elkins College as they beat West Virginia Tech 82-72. John Morgan led Tech with 17 points. Tech stood 6-12 overall and 4-10 in the conference while D and E moved to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in the league.

Greg Compton led Richlands with 17 points to power a 61-54 win over John Battle. Johnny McCall 12 and Craig Hunsaker 11 joined Compton, while Boo Chafin matched 17 for John Battle. Richlands outrebounded 43-36 and improved to 10-7 overall, 9-6 in district. Battle fell to 7-11, 6-11.
