Lawmakers schedule a Tuesday House vote on Barker's two thirds approval resolution to legalize a state run sweepstakes. If approved by House and Senate, a voter referendum could follow along with two additional statewide votes on convention delegates and ratification.
Ugandan Prime Minister Milton Obote alleges Congolese aircraft supplied by the United States bombed Paidha and Goli villages injuring a Ugandan soldier. Foreign Minister Sam Okada requests U S embassy contact as Kampala cites mercenaries aiding in Congo.
Members of the Bluefield Virginia Democrat Club plan a meeting Monday night at 7 30 p m. The gathering will happen at the Bluefield Town Hall with President Arch leading.
Charles C Walker of Philo College will be principal speaker at Bluefield State College for the second public forum on anti poverty. The event hosted by the Division of Social Science will be at 7 p.m. February 18 in the Big Blue Lounge Student Union. The first forum occurred December 12 1964 with Bluefield State College and Eastern Illinois University participants.
Mrs Gloria M Vanderbilt mother of heiress Gloria Vanderbilt died of cancer Saturday at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital after admission Feb 2. She had surgery on her aorta last Dec 8 and faced a custody battle over her daughter, with custody eventually awarded to Mrs Harry Payne Whitney.
Bluefield State College hosted Kleidoscope Players in a Sandburg program. Five performers Lee Speich Bill Fegan Erick Concklin Sam Burk and Ian Thompson presented a mix of poems philosophy wit and entertainment drawing on Sandburg's Song Bag and unpublished pieces.
On the Rainbow Bridge border, a commemorative service marked 150 years since the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812. White doves were released after color parties from the New York National Guard and Canada’s Lincoln and Welland Regiment led dignitaries and veterans from both nations.

Wednesday hosts Better Home and Garden Club Bishop at 11 a.m. with Mrs. Nora Lambright, then Kimball Home and Garden Club holds a special call at 5 p.m. and a 6 p.m. Family Relations class at Memorial Building Kimball led by Mrs. T J Livisay. Thursday brings 4Leaf Clover Club meeting at Robinsons Club Room Algoma at 11 a.m.
The Speech Arts Club will present three plays at 1 p.m. Monday at Tazewell County High School for district competition. Judge Mrs. Othello H. Jeff of Bluefield State College will select the top production to go to the District Dramatic Festival on March 25 at the same school. The line up includes The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe Scene and Twelve O Clock Murder.
A 25-year-old Richlands man faces murder charges from a Dec. 4 shooting that killed his wife Patricia Joann Clifton. Trial dates will be set Feb. 22 during the Tazewell County Circuit Court docket call, alongside several felonies including forgery and auto theft involving residents of Richlands, Pocahontas, and Blacksburg.

Funeral services for Lacy Massie were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Spanishburg Baptist Church with Rev. Clayton D. Sweet officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery. Massie died Friday of a heart attack at his Welch apartment. He was a World War I veteran, member of Masonic Lodge Odd Fellows American Legion Moose Lodge and the Massie family obituary notes. Survivors include two daughters and five grandchildren among others. The body was moved from Memorial Funeral Directory Princeton to the church at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Funeral services for Vonley D. Pruett 56 of Richlands Va will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Layman Chapel Church with burial at Hawkins Cemetery. Final rites set for Malon L. Harkleroad 67 of Big Stone Gap Monday at 2 p.m. in Holding Funeral Chapel with burial at Powell Valley Memorial Cemetery.
Paul Cole 24 former Whitewood resident died Saturday morning at his Martinsville home. He was the son of Mrs. Kate Cole and the late Jay Cole. Survived by five sisters Mell Matney Grundy Margaret Altizer Rosa Dye Jewell Ridge Brooks Jones Milford Ky Helen Justice Phyllis Ky and six brothers Harry Grat Grady Joe Barnes Cole Whitewood George Cole Flint Mich. Body at Hurst Scott Funeral Home Richlands pending funeral arrangements.
Suiter B Mayhan 76 of Pittsburgh Pa died suddenly at his home on Wednesday. He was the brother of John D Mayhan of 63 Powell Street Bluefield. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but services will be held in Pittsburgh. The family may be reached at 2515 Upton Street Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Carrie Mae Snider of 503 Highland Avenue Princeton died Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hospital after a several day stay. The body is at Seaver Mortuary Princeton where funeral arrangements are pending relatives arrival.
Mrs Mary Alice Calloway formerly of Bluefield died Thursday at her Bayonne New Jersey home She was sister to Mrs Ollie Mae Gwyn of 304 North Mercer Street Bluefield Funeral services are set for Monday in Bayonne.
Funeral services for Miles Ramey of Moutheard Kentucky will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Moutheard Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Edward Gorsuch and Rev. Jack Mutter. Burial follows in Flannary Cemetery with attendees asked to arrive at the church one hour before services.
Chief Britt Brown of Bluefield Virginia reports motorists still overlook the new traffic signal at College and Tazewell avenues. The light, moved from Virginia and College, includes a walk signal and is plainly visible from multiple directions. Brown cites frequent bypass traffic as the reason for installation.
Dr. L. B. Allen president of Bluefield State College will speak to Bluefield Rotarians at their noon meeting next Tuesday at the West Virginia Historic site. He joins a series of college presidents speaking for the club following Dr. Charles Harman of Bluefield College. President Joseph Marsh of Concord College in Athens will address the group at noon February.
Dr Julius B Richmond, 48, pediatrician and dean at State University of New York Syracuse, was named to lead Head Start amid White House talks with Mrs Johnson. The plan aims to aid about 100000 preschool children in poverty with 12000 volunteers and $167 million in federal funds. Mrs Johnson to host Feb 19 gathering to spur local program starts nationwide.
One Bluefield student and one from McDowell County are among 46 who earned straight A averages for the fall quarter at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. David L. Smith of Bluefield, in the College of Engineering, and Cal vin B. Wolfe of Bradshaw, in Arts and Sciences, are named.
