Princeton beat Beavers 48 to 32 in a Western tourney game. The result adds to 1944 sports activity as colleges press through a busy schedule during wartime.
Princeton led by Lee Patton’s squad posted a 48 32 victory over Bluefield Beavers as Ralph Ball and Jimmy Walthall led scoring. Beaver star Tommy Wallingford struggled with his shooting as Beavers drop to 4 16 this season.
Johnny Revolta, Evanston Illinois, shot a seven under par 64 to grab a five stroke lead at the Texas Open half way through the 72 hole event. Byron Nelson matched a course record with a 63 to move into a tie for second at 138 alongside Sam Byrd Melvin Harbert and Harold McSpaden.
In Miami Silvestra ridden by Ted Atkinson edged Moon Maiden by a head to win the $5,000 Black Helen handicap for fillies and mares at Hialeah Park. Moon Maiden led Fiddlers Bit by five lengths as Director J. E. dominated the $3.00 furlong sprint with a 1:12 1/5 clocking and paid $3.60. Fire Sticky and Alerter followed in the field.
Navy plebes Jack Carroll and Dick Duden teamed with captain Longnecker to defeat West Virginia 67 to 49. Allara led WVU with 38 points as Navy built a 28-20 halftime edge and held on for the victory in Annapolis with Longnecker scoring five field goals.
In Charleston West Virginia Gabby Street the 61 year old former St Louis Cardinals catcher caught a baseball hurled from a 20 story building. The ball valued at 5000 in war bonds was snapped up at auction amid 2500 spectators despite snow and cold as Street promoted war loan bonds in Charleston.
I E Ewing of Wheeling announced the referees and regional directors for the state high school basketball tournament at Morgantown March 17-18 and the regional events March 10-11. New judges include Gerald Gainer Wheeling C P Pete Wilson Huntington Glenn Taylor Matewan and Hank Mazza Clarksburg.
AP Features poll lists Bobby Jones's grand slam as top achievement. Babe Ruth's 714 homers and 2099 RBIs noted with 80 000 salary. Jesse Owens third with multiple world records and Berlin 1936 sprint titles. Other names include Lou Gehrig Jim Thorpe Vander Meer Grange Cobb Dempsey Warmerdam.
