West Virginia Republicans open what leaders call the most portentous campaign since the Emancipator ran for president. Lincoln day dinners in 22 communities feature national and state figures including Senators Hastings and Nice, with talk of tariff protection and a businesslike administration.
Two youths from Laken reformatory confessed to a spree of break ins in Bluefield. George Johnson and James Hayes admitted 19 and 7 entries respectively after escaping twice from the colored reformatory in Laken West Virginia. Police say the pair traveled through December 1939 and January 1940 committing multiple thefts.
Republican notables spoke in many cities praising party principles and condemning the New Deal. Dewey in Portland warned of a drift to totalitarianism if re elected. Taft in Greensboro cited capital erosion and plant wear. Bridges in Oklahoma City urged caution against government power.
Paul V. McNutt, federal administrator, to investigate a report that tickets to a strip‑tease party were found in the Social Security Board headquarters in Baltimore. An open letter from Engel noted a Baltimore Sun account of a raid on a suburban resort where 250 men and five women were arrested and tickets allegedly linked to board employees were sold inside the headquarters.
The 3,771-ton German freighter Wakama bound for Germany with oils was reported sunk or scuttled after an encounter with a British warship near Rio de Janeiro. SOS signals were picked up, rescue ships found nothing afloat, and reports from Arria Mendi and Bage indicated no survivors. The Hawkins later arrived in harbor with unclear details.
Eloise Lockard, eighteen, of Grafton West Virginia, regained hearing after 13 months of deafness caused by nerve paralysis. She heard voices at home and confirmed the return by telephoning her father, her doctors had declared unlikely. The deafness struck while she was a Grafton high school senior. she later graduated.
The Ohio River broke free its gorged ice and moved west, damaging small craft and easing floods. Meteorologists reported ice flowing along the river as engineers predicted a return to normal navigation. Towboats Omar and Sam P. Suit set out from Huntington for Cincinnati as mush ice filled the river at Point Pleasant.
Russian forces renew heavy assault along the Summa sector near Viipuri with tanks and heavy artillery. Finnish communique reports 72 Russian tanks destroyed in a day as Vooksi and Tai pale fronts see coordinated bombardment and counterattacks. The main thrust targets the center and east flank of Karelia isthmus front.
Thomas F. Hawkins describes a rest dugout near the Sum sector where Finnish soldiers read, play chess, and enjoy the famous steam baths believed to build stamina. The writer observes orderly bunks, electric ventilation, and gifts from home as shells whiz overhead in the war with Soviet Russia.
In Toledo on February 12 5 12 year old David Henry was fatally strangled by an electric clothes wringer. Police and firemen freed him but his hand and arm were trapped by the rollers after his mother momentarily left the laundry. A physician attended but could not save him.
Berlin reports Germany and Soviet Russia signed a new trade pact to speed raw materials and manufactured goods exchange. The agreement aims to secure Russia’s imports of precision tools and machinery while Germany seeks needed munitions and equipment amid ongoing fighting.
The Supreme Court reversed four Florida Negro defendants' death sentences for a 1933 robbery slaying, ruling five days of continuous interrogation without charges violated due process. Justice Black led a unanimous decision denouncing “secret inquisitorial” tactics that terrorized prisoners. defendants Izell Chambers Jack Williamson Charlie Davis and Walter Woodward were among those questioned after the killing in Pompano.
Britain builds a large Australian and New Zealand troop reservoir in the Near East with 570000 Allied personnel expected. Anzac forces land in Egypt, forming a desert camp and ready for rapid deployment to Palestine or Turkey if hostilities resume, amid broader wartime support for Romania and Malta.
