A spate of crashes on U S Route 460 in Tazewell County after morning ice and speeding stretched first responders thin. Fire Chief Jim Hardy called it an extremely busy morning as Bluefield firefighters aided in four of eight crashes. A 49 year old man required extrication from a rollover at Route 460 and Route 1527 with head lacerations and multiple fractures from a 1998 Ford Mustang. A helicopter landing zone was established at Graham Middle School.
West Virginia education officials voted to accept a memorandum of understanding to return McDowell County Schools to provisional local control by July 1, with full restoration within two years. Since 2001 the state board has controlled funding, staffing, calendars, and instructional practices due to low scores and poor facilities.
