Princeton Mercer County Board of Education President Dr. Allen Lackey announced the board will advertise for a new county school superintendent within a week to replace John M. Hughes whose contract ends June 30. Advertisements will be nationwide, salary and criteria to be set, a special session is planned. Hughes’ current salary is 42,500 dollars.
Princeton amateur boxer Mike Pitzer, 17, stayed in critical condition at Charleston Area Medical Center four days after doctors removed brain blood clots. Nursing Supervisor Sharon Palousky said he remains in intensive care, unconscious, with no improvement in his status.
Vladimir Yakimetz, a Soviet citizen and UN Secretariat staffer, defected and reportedly seeks political asylum in the United States. UN spokesman Francois Giuliani said Yakimetz sent a letter noting his asylum request and had not been in the office since the week began. He is married and worked in the Office for Program Planning and Coordination, earning about $30,000 gross.
