A Valentine Day clipper system is forecast to bring several inches more snow and the region remains in a cold air pattern with continued heavy snow and hazardous travel. Appalachian Power logged 144 outages in McDowell County and highway crews hold about 10,000 tons of salt for February amid ongoing deliveries and limited effectiveness in the cold.
National Weather Service data show Bluefield’s highest seasonal snowfall totals recorded between September 1 and May 30 for 1959 through 2010. The record highlights the area’s heaviest winters, listing top snowfall amounts and the periods they occurred.
Harvey Lee Henley Jr., 33, of Princeton, was charged with first degree murder after the 6:30 p.m. shooting death of Johnny Midkiff Jr., 33, of Lashmeet. Sheriff Don Meadows said the two men were familiar with each other and investigators had a possible motive.
Bluefield has logged 55.5 inches of snow this winter with expectations of surpassing 60 inches. Meteorologist Dave Wert of the National Weather Service in Blacksburg says the region may still approach the 1995 Bluefield record of 77.8 inches as another clipper system could add inches by Valentine’s Day. The winter is unusually heavy and not yet over.
Mercer County Grand Jury issued indictments in the February 2010 session. Mark Lynn Jeffrey is charged with purchasing a child sexual abuse first degree sexual assault first degree and sexual abuse by a custodian linked to a 2006 incident. Cameron Joseph Marrs 17 faces first degree murder in the Oct 4 2009 stabbing at Oriole Avenue and Quail Valley Drive Princeton. Sheriff’s Department investigated.
Five men were indicted by the Mercer County Grand Jury in the February 2010 session over a probe into Bluefield Sanitary Board activities. Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Timm Boggess said the indictments include Robert Terry Honaker for fraudulent scheme and obtaining money by false pretenses, Steven Burkhart Sr. for fraudulent scheme and falsifying accounts, and Joseph Anthony Nunn for fraudulent scheme among others.
