Mandela to be freed from prison Sunday

Nelson Mandela will be freed Sunday after 27 years in prison for opposing white minority rule. President F W de Klerk announced the move aiming to end racial conflict and advance negotiations for political rights. Mandela and de Klerk met, a photo released, and celebrations erupted across Johannesburg and Soweto.

Virginia House OKs statewide smoke free public areas bill

The Virginia House committee approved Del. Bernard Cohen’s clean indoor air measure establishing state minimum standards for no smoking in public places such as stores and restaurants. The bill bans smoking in elevators, school buses, restrooms and certain hospital areas while allowing localities to adopt stricter rules.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Set for Feb Twenty Second Secret Launch

NASA announced Atlantis will lift off in the early hours of Feb 22 for a classified military mission. Launch is planned between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m., following a two day flight readiness review with no major problems found. The engine turbopump replacement caused a one day delay but was completed without impacting the schedule. Pentagon and NASA will reveal the exact time nine minutes before liftoff to thwart Soviet tracking.

Increasing cloudiness and a 30 percent rain chance

The National Weather Service forecasts increasing cloudiness with a 30 percent chance of rain this afternoon possibly mixed with wet snow. Highs will be in the mid 40s. Tonight, a 30 percent chance of snow in the early evening, clearing after midnight with lows in the mid 20s.

Very good day for Germany signals reunification progress

West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said Mikhail Gorbachev promised to respect German reunification and called it a very good day for Germany. Kohl and Hans-Dietrich Genscher urged a four-power allied plan this year for a pan European summit. Gorbachev agreed the decision is the German people's and noted de facto unification is accelerating. Tass reported a new political situation in central Europe as East and West Germany move toward unity.

Good fish will come to those who wait official says

Cavitt's Creek Lake in Tazewell County opened to stocking in 1988 with bass catfish and panfish. Eli Jones, game commissioner, says fishing will be allowed no earlier than 1991 to protect ecological balance and ensure proper growth and water quality. He urges reporting of unauthorized fishing to the sheriff.

GRTA plans Mercer County bus route expansion

The Gateway Regional Transit Authority will extend service in Mercer County starting May 1 with six daily runs to areas including Hail's Culvert Brushfork Bluewell Montcalm Roses Route 20 portion and Glenwood Park. GRTA cites federal grant cuts and aims to boost ridership while matching funds come from Mercer County Bluefield and daily operations.
