In Saigon and Hue fighting intensified as a convoy of hundreds of U S Marines arrived to reinforce Hue during the Communist offensive. American and South Vietnamese troops pressed forward against stubborn enemy resistance, while at Khe Sanh Marines dug in for the expected supreme confrontation.
A Communist thrust led by North Vietnamese divisions advances toward the northern border region of South Vietnam as part of ongoing fighting. The operation concentrates on metal, supply lines, and strategic positions near border areas.
Fresh Marines push toward Hue base 380 miles northeast of Saigon while Americal Division units claim 173 enemy killed and 45 weapons captured near Hoi An. Fourteenth Infantry, attached to Americas, reports 12 Americans killed and 43 wounded as fighting broadens toward Da Nang. Viet Cong’s Mekong Delta assault on Tan An leaves 122 enemy dead and 11 soldiers and 120 civilians wounded, with four Americans killed and 49 wounded nearby at Camp Holloway Pleiku.
A report on renewed racial tensions at Bluefield State College will be submitted Tuesday to Cav Hulette Smith from the State Board of Education. NAACP representatives criticized campus suspensions of about 20 students, mostly Negroes, for civil rights activities, while college officials blamed academic poor grades. West Virginia NAACP President Herbert Henderson urged a mass protest outside the Capitol next Saturday unless changes occur by Tuesday, describing the college as a target of a “white power structure.”
An Air Force man and his son were shot by a couple who flagged them down claiming a hunting accident. Troopers tie the pair to a Georgia murder charge against Benny Brown, 2, of LaFayette, with a red Rambler used in both incidents and two bullet holes noted. Three other youths were wounded.

Gov. Nelson Rockefeller halted the nine day garbage workers strike by proposing a temporary state takeover of the city sanitation department. A fleet of 450 trucks was sent to slum areas and about 6,000 workers were ordered to overtime. Rockefeller seeks legislation to fund the emergency run department and to pay strikers via a mediators plan offering a $425 annual raise. Lindsay denounces the plan as capitulation and calls for limits on wage demands.
Everett R. Johnson of Greenville in Monroe County was killed in action in Vietnam on February 6. He served as a specialist fourth class in the Army and died amid pending funeral arrangements. He is survived by his parents John C. and Louise M. Johnson, his wife Sue L. Johnson, three brothers Wayne David and Aury Johnson, and a sister Ruth Darleen Johnson. Broyles Funeral Home of Union handles arrangements.
In New Hampshire the write-in campaigns for Senator Robert Kennedy and Governor Ronald Reagan were dropped after a Supreme Court decision allowed earlier filings. A full Rockefeller slate was filed, while Kennedy and Reagan backers shifted support to Eugene McCarthy. Nixon has a fully pledged Republican slate.
The West Virginia Legislature ends its session after passing a record 25.5 million dollar budget boosting education funding by 14.6 million for 1968-69. Senate 24 yes 1 no House 74 yes 2 no with sine die adjournment.
Area roads were clear after Friday night icing conditions that had state police in Southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia calling driving conditions deadly and dangerous. A fatal wreck in Bland County Virginia involving Mrs. Mary Rose Havens occurred Friday night, plus several minor accidents. Weather forecasts predict continued cold, with snow flurries possible in places and high temperatures in the teens to 20s.
Former Vice President Richard M Nixon said the sanitation workers strike in New York was a patent illegal tactic to force a larger settlement by extortion. He warned that acquiescing would invite repetition in every great city in America during a campaign stop in Indiana.
Cyrus Vance arrived for talks with South Korean and U.S. officials on the Korean crisis after the Panmunjom meetings. informants said final procedures may be set for releasing one dead and three injured crew members of the Pueblo. The South Koreans seek relief from the looming North Korean threat as debates over longer compulsory military service intensify.
Debby Lynn Sayers, six, of Max Meadows Va, died in a Pulaski hospital from injuries in a Wythe County noncollision accident. State police said children placed soft drink bottles in a parked car. one knocked it out of gear, trapping the girl as the car rolled over her near the Sayers residence west of the Pulaski Wythe County line.
Gloucester County Virginia Sheriff reports Dolson E. West 30 Perrin and Hilda Elizabeth Jessen 36 Hayes killed after attacker forced their car off Virginia 216 near U S 17. Jessen died en route to hospital, West found dead at scene. Suspect is local acquaintance of victims.
