Wellsburg February 10 The death of the state's principal witness probably ends the prolonged case against Frank A Pietranton former Hancock County prosecutor The witness Eugene James Taccone 56 of Follansbee died in a Steubenville hospital He was the man accused by Pietranton of misappropriating 2833 of his funds while Pietranton represented him in a damage suit The suit arose from a 1949 highway accident in which Taccone lost a leg and other injuries.

Higher sales tax proposed by West Virginia Senate Democrats

Charleston February 10. Senate Finance Committee introduced bills to raise the consumer sales tax to 3 percent with funds earmarked for West Virginia University Medical School. The plan also targets revenue from other tax changes including exemptions cuts and wagering tax adjustments. The House debated a constitutional amendment to allow two terms for sheriff and similar officials. Senate leaders and Gov. Marland discussed roads. revenue measures were under review as part of a broader tax program.

Liquor Patronage Curbed by Proposed House Bill

Charleston February 10. A Temperance Committee bill seeks to bar state officials and relatives from serving as representatives for distilleries or wineries selling to the Liquor Control Commission. In Roanoke Virginia a long time city employee James Cabdle Maxey shot his wife Gladys E. Maxey 47 at their home in front of a daughter and then shot himself in the head.
