The Quebec Steamship Company vessel Madiana capt Fraser left New York Feb 7 for West Indian ports via Bermuda ran ashore west of North Rock and is expected to be a total wreck. Passengers and mail were rescued. the ship on a Caribbean excursion cruise is a total loss.
Genoa reports the death of Hebbard T Smith United States Vice Consul General at Cairo. He had been hospitalized here for some time and died this morning from kidney cancer.
James Thompson age 22 and Mises Lizzie Akers age 43 were wed near Auburn in Montgomery county after a long courtship. They searched for Rev Ballard Keleeer until found on a public highway and were married there. The bride is six months older than the groom’s mother and related to the groom’s grandmother’s brother’s wife.

Washington reports a major railroad struggle in West Virginia as the Wabash battles the Baltimore and Ohio for control. The Wabash plans, with ex Senator Davis and Senator Elkins, to unite coal lands and new lines into a vast network reaching coal fields and eastern markets, with extensions to Elkins and Cumberland and a possible seaport in Virginia. The Davis Elkins syndicate aims to create a large, independent system with coal and timber interests shaping the future rail map.
A traveling salesman for Stephen Patney Shoe Co named JFL Arington was shot dead at the Dan Giex Hotel after an argument at the supper table with Walter Smith Sams. Smith fired one shot, injuring Arington fatally. Smith was arrested and jailed in Fayetteville, claiming self defense.
The Supreme Court of Appeals logged several cases across Wetzel Ritchie Doddridge and Tyler counties. Creed Collins et al v Sherwood and Eclipse Oil Co v Garner were submitted on briefs or continued to March 1 or March 20.
