Thieves Rampage Across Pineville Area Steal Car and Loot Stores
Thieves struck Pineville area again this week stealing a Chevrolet sedan from W. M. Lewis between 3 and 4 PM Monday. The Piggly Wiggly store was burglarized Monday night with cash and groceries taken. Entry came by cutting wire netting and removing a barricade. State police and local officers investigated. Other targets include Wall 5 and 10 cent store in October, Pine Ridge and Goins service stations, Holloway Drug, Allen's Restaurant, and Pine eater. Earlier, burglars failed to force a liquor store rear door after being startled by Coy Hash.

The Tazewell county board approved adding a half mile in Baptist Hollow and a Raven to Buchanan county line road to the secondary system, extending Route 691 and 618 respectively. The state health department pledged 3500 for the health program. Transfers of 14550.42 were ordered to the school board for six new buses. The county farm reported 3842 in cash sales, 1048.27 net operating cost, and 18 inmates at 4.85 monthly. Welfare head Jack Hyatt presented the next fiscal budget.

Fire destroys Ward and Womack store at Jim Baileysville
Undetermined origin fire gutted the Ward and Womack store near Baileysville in the early hours of Wednesday. Passersby raised the alarm at about 3 00 am as a bucket brigade formed but the building with a cinder block shell was completely lost. Losses are estimated at 30000 to 40000 dollars. The store manager had been in a hospital for days and a brother oversaw operations. Formerly run by Everett Miller of Baileysville, the property had been leased to the current management a few months earlier.

Peter Trent Dies at 85 in Mullens
Peter Trent of New Richmond died of pneumonia at his daughter Della Bailey's home in Mullens. Funeral services were held at Mullens Baptist Church with Rev. J. R. Gillespie officiating. Burial followed at the family cemetery in War Eagle, McDowell County. Survivors include his wife Blanche and several relatives in Baileyville, Minneapolis, Columbus, Washington D C, and Pax.
