A man named Harry Taylor reportedly confessed to killing a stranger and hiding the body under the floor of an abandoned mountain house. The body bore a gunshot wound and a deep stab wound. Taylor fled, with deputies surrounding his home as authorities pursued him.
Staunton, February 9. Counsel for John Kennedy, condemned to hang for wrecking a Norfolk and Western train near Greenville, sought a writ of habeas corpus at Lexington. Judge Letcher granted the writ and will hear arguments. three prominent Staunton lawyers will argue. defense contends the sentencing court no longer exists.
George Jaggers, accused of murdering Mrs. Victor E. Berant near Dingmans in October, attempted suicide in Susquehanna County Jail. He used a corn knife hidden in his cell and is weak from blood loss, delaying his trial set for today.
The War Department told Governor Montague that proof sheets of Confederate muster rolls cannot be provided. The department will not modify rolls or add unofficial documents due to clerical delays. All Confederate rolls must be sent to the department as official records from the Civil War era.
G Nash Foster, senior partner at Foster & Hensel, died at his Roanoke residence on Fourth avenue after two years of ill health. He leaves a wife and young child, belonged to Pleasants Lodge of Masons and was a Knight Templar, to be buried under Masons auspices. He was 42 and had lived in Roanoke about thirteen years.
Boston, February 9. Rev Joshua Young D D a noted anti slavery preacher and Underground Railroad agent who performed the last rites over John Brown died yesterday at his Winchester home. Born in Pittston Maine in 1823 he led multiple pastorates after entering ministry in 1849 and was prominent in Masonry.

Rocky Mount Virginia February 9 A report on the Roanoke gang’s capture notes three suspicious men seen at the Norfolk and Western station about midnight and later near Wertz station. A countryman alerted officials, failed to trap the trio, who fled toward Wertz.
Roanoke officials say there is nothing new on the arrest scene in the Mrs Shields case. Posters describe the suspect while a strong new clue prompts hope the chase may end in forty eight hours if leads pan out. Mrs Shields and her daughter recover as authorities pursue a local suspect and a possible North Fork, West Virginia link.
On February 9 Baltimore's fire ravaged eastern districts bound by Liberty street Lexington Jones Falls and the basin. Fire was largely out by morning but rain and cold threaten two weeks of suffering as food supplies dwindled with much burned in the district including the commission business area.
Grand Forks North Dakota February 9 for twenty four hours the Great Northern special carrying high officials was buried in a snow drift near Niles North Dakota What started as a joke turned serious as fuel and provisions ran out Louis Hill Frank E Ward and F W Blabon joined snow shovels to free the party General Superintendent E F Brown George Emerson J C Howard and Edward James also struggled through the snow before escaping with the others.
Rev. G W Miles Rigor of the United Brethren Church in North Vineland is ill after completing fifty years in the pulpit. Born in 1831 in Scottdale Pennsylvania he preached first in Johnstown in 1854 and later served as presiding elder for a decade. He helped found Lebanon Valley College at Annville and served as secretary of the Eastern Conference for twenty five years. About eight thousand converts were professed and two thousand five hundred joined the church during his ministry.
The Mexican government and public in Mexico City closely monitor events on the Isthmus of Panama and in Washington amid anxiety over U S imperialist implications. Editorials funded by the Diaz regime criticize Anglo-Saxon aggression and discuss Central American alignment with Mexico, while Mexico has yet to recognize Panama.

In Richmond Virginia around 11 p m three negro men attempted to kill Motorman W E Marshall and hold up Riverview car No 40 near Riverview cemetery after dark. Marshall and Conductor Wright spotted the suspects earlier and reported to police who pursued the case without locating the assailants. A rock shattered the car vestibule injuring Marshall a later pursuit yielded no arrests. A separate notice seeks an experienced tobacco salesman for a territory from Lynchburg to Williamson and Norton in Virginia and West Virginia.

A St Petersburg dispatch reports Admiral Alexieff stating nine Japanese boats mined the Port Arthur squadron at midnight on the Sth. Ships Retvizen Tsarevitch and Palleda damaged. Tokyo reports Port Arthur in flames and eleven Japanese warships lost. One Russian warship reportedly sunk with eleven Russians killed and many wounded.
Admiral Alexieff reported to the czar that the battleships Ketvizen Caprevitch and the cruiser Pallada were wrecked after Japanese torpedo boats braved harbor mines and torpedoed Russian ships. Russians attempted a small attack from Pallada as panic spread and torpedoes exploded nearby.
An official dispatch reports Japanese torpedo boats attacked the Russian squadron in the outer roads at Port Arthur with three Russian ships damaged. A 2:30 p.m. dispatch says eleven Japanese and one Russian warship were sunk in the attack and martial law has been declared as the town burns.
