Seaboard has purchased Gladeville railroad and coal lands and acquired larger mineral tracts. Presence of engineer corps creates excitement in Wise County with big deals reported and local activity hot.
The Norfolk and Western lines expand through Clinch Valley with new coal operations and land deals. Seaboard Air Line buys Gladeville and Virginia and Southern lines for 40 000 and 300 000 dollars, tapping Flat Top fields. Indian River railroad nears traffic, extended routes planned, and Tom Hill Dorchester and Stonega coal activity grows with large coal companies shipping daily. Richlands hosts new baryta plant and glass factory purchase.
A thin starving dog was found lying atop a rock near a crevice between Conners and Pocahontas. A large party planned to explore the old mine shaft today hoping to locate the master believed dead and recover the canine.

A miner named Cockrum of Lynchburg Coal & Coke Company was killed near North Fork Junction between North Fork and Kyle Friday night. He stepped onto a westbound track to avoid an eastbound freight and was struck, dragged, and mutilated by the passing train. He was about 28, single, and the body was found with severe injuries near the bridge.
In Washington today Representative Hughes met with Mercer of Nebraska to discuss a bill for a new federal building at Huntington. A statement from Huntington's board of trade supported the need for the public building and urged passage. The Grafton post office dispute nears settlement with Major Bruce Blue likely to be named postmaster.
