Mercer McDowell Dentist Society volunteers gathered at Dr David A Najar's Princeton office for Give Kids a Smile offering checkups cleanings fluoride and other services families struggle to afford. Bonnie Muncy spoke of high costs and gasoline for dental visits as gas hit 4 29 a gallon and a 240 bill for her children. Ledessa Burress said they lost dental insurance in December and learned of the program through her daughter’s school.

Walkathon memorial spawns Armbrister scholarship in 1992

In Mercer and Tazewell counties a weekend crash toll spurred the Craig Armbrister Memorial Scholarship. Craig Armbrister, 21, WVU senior and Bluefield College alum, died when a Subaru left the West Virginia Turnpike. His parents' communities launched the Walkathon and the scholarship, with Beverly Austin, Shannon Hamlin, Steve Vanney and Eric Williams as initial recipients in spring 1992.
