The government reports unemployment at 7.1 percent, with 91,000 more workers laid off last month, damping hopes for an early economic upturn. President Bush proposes a no-frills health aid system offering vouchers and tax credits to cover basic medical needs. A family of three could receive up to 3750 while individuals could gain up to 1250 per year. Geographic price variation could affect adequacy.
Bland County citizens traveled to Richmond for a Senate subcommittee hearing on a moratorium on medical waste incinerator permits. Representing the board, Gary Cutlip and Nancy Paciga voiced support for Senate bill 346 introduced by Sen. Jack Reasor Jr., citing an impact study before construction resumes.
