Tragic incident in Tazewell County leaves father and son dead
Tazewell County deputies state a father Dakota Cochran and his 2-year-old son Thomas Cochran died after a sequence described as stripping themselves and entering woods. Responding agencies located both in the Moore Mountain Road area and the river below the residence. Despite CPR and hospital efforts, the child died and the man was pronounced dead. The sheriff called it a tragic incident.

Steel beams rise for Grant Street Bridge in Bluefield
Steel started flying Monday as beams were hoisted to place the Grant Street Bridge piers in Bluefield. City Engineer Kerry Stauffer said it was time for the steel portion after concrete supports were in place. Brayman Construction uses a large crane and coordinates with Norfolk Southern Railroad.

Suspect Arrested Over Embezzlement at Southern Highlands
Matthew Patrick Huffman 36 of Abingdon Virginia formerly Bluefield was arrested Monday and arraigned on felony counts including embezzlement computer fraud five counts of fraudulent use of a credit card three counts of forgery fraudulent creation of a demand draft and fraudulent schemes. The case stems from a Mercer County Sheriff detective probe into illicit transactions totaling forty five thousand two hundred fifty eight dollars and fifty one cents at Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center with an audit and review by the center. The investigation began December 15 2022 after concerns about about thirty six thousand dollars embezzled at the center. Huffman is free on a fifty thousand dollar personal recognizance bond. The charges followed interviews with Lisa Jones the CEO and Angela Peterson the CFO.

Lawmaker: No talk of Justice car tax reimbursement plan
Gov. Jim Justice proposed on day one a plan to reimburse residents for county level vehicle personal property tax. House and Senate leaders say they have heard no discussion. The plan parallels Amendment 2, which would authorize cutting or ending local taxes while replacing lost revenue. Justice opposed the amendment.
