Contaminated Tazewell Water Systems Prompt Boil Advisory

Several water systems in Tazewell County have been contaminated with coliform bacteria and deemed unfit to drink. Angles Hollow Bernicetown Divides Head of Abbs Valley and Springville Heights McMullen Spring and Lilliland Spring residents are told to boil drinking water for 10 minutes. Health Department spokesman G W Peaks said samples taken from July to December 1986 show coliform presence.

Unemployment holds at 6.7 percent in January

The U S unemployment rate remained at 6.7 percent in January, with 375 000 new jobs per the household survey and 450 000 per the payroll survey. Labor force grew by 450 000 while December saw a 90 000 drop in labor force. Construction added jobs due to mild weather and permit surges, amid mixed views on seasonal adjustments and a growing economy.

Reappraisal and credit card rate bills move through Charleston

The Senate approved extending the property tax reappraisal appeal period to May 1 after delays by counties, while the House pushed a 43 percent increase in dog track bets. The Senate backed a bill removing limits on credit card interest, sending it to the governor, with supporters arguing rates will fall in competitive markets and opponents warning of rapid rate hikes.

Judicial budget rules eyed

A proposed constitutional amendment would give the Legislature more control over the state Supreme Court budget. Senate Minority Leader Bud Harman notes West Virginia currently lets the judiciary set its own budget and cites the U.S. Supreme Court as needing congressional budget justification. The 22 sponsors must secure one more vote in the Senate for two thirds and the House would need another two thirds to place the measure on the statewide ballot.

Mercer delegation bids to join New River Parkway group

A Mercer County delegation plans a second bid to gain admittance to the New River Parkway Association. Bluestone Highland members mapped strategy after a Friday meeting, seeking a telegram from Rep. Nick Rahall and a pledge that completing the I-64 to Hinton link remains a joint priority to unlock roughly 17 million dollars in federal funds. Del. Richard Flanigan cited fears Mercer presence would shift funds from the original Parkway to Route 20, as House funding moves toward Senate conference.
