The lengthy filing wave neared midnight as candidates raced to enter the May 10 primary. Charleston figures like Litz McGuire and others filed for governor senate and congress while party conventions and nominations filled the political landscape across West Virginia.
Senate President Ralph J. Bean of Moorefield filed his candidacy to join a five person Democratic field for governor. Bean touted a clean campaign and opposed to political machines, claiming no financial backing from any group. Other Democratic contenders include Atty. Gen. W. W. Barron Hulett Smith House Speaker Harry R. Pauley and Treasurer Orel J. Skeen.
Guns and church bells sparked a citywide false alarm as artillery salutes marked the queen's accession anniversary. Crowds cheered Prince Philip home from Norfolk as rumors swirled about a royal birth.
Charleston Senate Finance Committee sent a bill providing 4.35 million for public works to relieve unemployment and a total operating budget of 113.33 million for state agencies starting July 1, with increased allocations for West Virginia University and the state colleges. The plan adds about 10 percent raises for educational staff and funds new positions to address high student–teacher ratios, while leaving most other departments' budgets intact. It also earmarks 3.4 million for park and forest repairs, 500 thousand for area retraining, 300 thousand for agricultural programs, 50 thousand for soil conservation, and 100 thousand for possible use by Public Assistance. Tass portrayed West Virginia as a misery district in a dispatch datelined New York, citing Western poverty beside wealth in natural resources. State leaders rebutted, noting industrial development and disputed the Post article as exaggerated. lawmakers contrasted regional blight with worse areas elsewhere and defended state progress.
House investigators urge Congress to outlaw rigged quiz shows and payola and curb industry abuses. They fault FCC and FTC for inaction and press for licensing networks and power to suspend licenses, plus ban deceptive materials and advertiser control.

About 100 Mercer county candidates filed or mailed certificates for the May 10 primary. Democrats and Republicans will nominate for the November general election and voters choose members of the Mercer county board of education. The non partisan education contest and long ballots suggest hot primary races, especially on the Democratic side. Certificates for state and county offices have been filed with the secretary of state.
Grady Carper, president of Mercer General Insurance Agency in Princeton, was appointed to fill the vacancy on the Mercer County Board of Education after C. R. Justice's death. He will run in the May 10 election and has filed his candidacy. Carper has broad civic roles in Princeton and past public service, including Rotary, Elks, Princeton Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, and youth organizations. He is a former teacher and a Pearisburg native, married to Ruth Morris, with three children.
Soviet First Deputy Premier Anastas I. Mikoyan received tight protection in Havana on Saturday as Cuba and the Soviet Union explore renewed ties. Cuban officials denied knowledge of his weekend program while police and guards surrounded his residence and motor convoy.
The Associated Press reports rain sleet and snow across the northeast on Saturday. Western Washington saw steady rain while parts of Michigan Indiana Ohio and Pennsylvania received fresh snow as a Canadian air mass moved in. Traverse City and Petoskey Michigan logged several inches with one foot coverage in the Upper Peninsula. New York and New England saw mostly melting precipitation while Mt. Washington New Hampshire measured one inch.
