Charleston leaders report a busy third week as the West Virginia legislature adjourns briefly. The House advances the Howell compensation bill and debates road bond measures while the Senate approves a $3200 payment to Charleston for council chambers and passes one bill. The session features financial and constitutional debates, including road bond plans and a proposed tax reform.
Thirteen people were rescued and one man, J. A. Perkins, 65, of Oak Park Illinois, died after a glass bottom boat exploded near the head of Silver Springs Florida injuring several others. Mrs Perkins survived in shock with others burned mildly. Passengers included Elizabeth Giles of Wheeling West Virginia and Mr and Mrs Foreman of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The boat carried sightseers viewing fish and vegetation through a glass panel when the explosion occurred just as it left the landing near shore.
New York February 6 Belle Livingstone known for witty remarks during arrests began a 30 day sentence for contempt of court after a raid on her Park Avenue salon. Convicted for allegedly ignoring an injunction to stop liquor service she faced a judge who imposed the minimum due to her age and perceived ignorance of the law.
A letter to Tom Winsall Jr. claimed Lilly would be his bride if he called that night after a prior proposal. The note, mailed in 1909 for his late father, reveals Lilly, who died long ago, never married.
London's court reveals T S Mardy Jones, once a respected MP and economist, fined 20 dollars for using a non transferable parliamentary railway pass for his wife. Charles E. Kenner a 27 year old broker was found guilty of grand larceny and sentenced to two and a half years at Sing Sing He had been arrested in Denver Colorado on December 21 operating as Charles W Best & Company The suit arose from selling stock in a non existent Kentucky oil company.
Washington reports plans for a hybrid craft by George W. Hardin of Greene County Tennessee. The device mixes airplane fuselage with a small dirigible for safety, allowing separate operation if one motor fails. A $50,000 army test bill was introduced by Rep Reece. Goodyear Zeppelin officials urged trans-oceanic service must be supported by airmail contracts.
Charleston Feb 6 An ex state trooper testified he aided the Republican party in Cabin Creek district during the last election and was later told to resign by Superintendent Brooks. Other troopers testified about incidents surrounding Logan county matters and letters urging transfers tied to Tennis Hatfield and J D Hatfield.
Washington February six The administration and Democrats reach a pact to fund a twenty million dollar drought loan for agricultural rehabilitation replacing the disputed twenty five million dollar Red Cross grant. President Hoover approves the deal easing fears of an extra session and sets up handling of veteran relief legislation next.
Despondent over unemployment, 37 year old Peter Zacharewecz killed himself in Morgantown West Virginia on February 6. He initially attempted suicide with his shirt as a noose and later used barbed wire.
Final proceedings yesterday in the Minnie Stull murder trial were broadcast live from the Mercer county courtroom in Princeton. Station WHIS, owned by the Daily Telegraph and Sunset News, the Bluefield Telephone Company, and Sheriff J Otis Bowling, aired final arguments as the case was submitted to the jury with Judge George L Dillard granting permission. Hundreds listened from the courthouse steps and distant locations via a public address system set up for the event.
Charleston W V Feb 6 A bill by Delegate Scott proposes segregating property for taxation an income tax on incomes over 1000 for singles and 2000 for married plus a one cent rise in the gasoline tax The plan would reenact the taxation chapter of the new code and adjust rates under gross sales privilege taxes The income tax would run 15 percent on incomes above 1000 to 3000 for singles and 150 percent on incomes above 2000 to 3000 for married filers with higher brackets 3000 to 5000 and over 5000 taxed at 3 percent.

Lilly former attorney general resigns as associate counsel for the state police at the request of the House committee investigating the department Lilly said the committee feared his continued appearance and that the probe was not conducted in good faith He warned of exposing alleged Democratic control led by Don Chafin and noted his duty to protest testimony he deemed irrelevant interactions with the Logan county sheriff’s office triggered the dispute
Oxford researchers report a discovery near Babylon that exposes the first well preserved Sassanian palace atop ancient ruins showing Sumerian layers. Prof Stephen Langdon says the palace may shed light on Roman–Sassanian conflicts as excavations progress and inscriptions and coins are sought to date construction.
Paris February six. Andre Tardieu minister of agriculture plans to announce 1931 foreign wheat requirements simultaneously in major centers worldwide to curb speculation. He gave no official statement but said government will prevent speculation as far as possible. If carried out the announcement would come from Chicago Winnipeg Buenos Aires Bucharest and Paris.
Washington reports the hearing into charges against Bishop James Cannon Jr. of the Methodist Episcopal Church South neared conclusion as twelve ministers weigh verdicts. If five find no weight, he is cleared. if eight find truth, he faces suspension and a 1934 general conference trial.
In Princeton West Virginia February 6 1936 Mrs Minnie Stull faces possible first degree murder verdict for killing her 8 year old son Mickey. Defense lawyer John R Pendleton made a dramatic plea as jurors began four hours of arguments then retired at 5pm to deliberate. radio broadcast drew crowds from across Mercer County as witnesses awaited the verdict.
