Princeton City Police begin issuing five dollar parking tickets for two hour limit violations after the fine increased from one dollar. Police Chief Charles Kassay urges public awareness as enforcement starts Wednesday.
The House Health and Human Resources Committee endorsed a bill to license midwives 19-6 despite opposition from the state Medical Association. The measure, which now goes to the House floor, would create an eight member licensing board and require medical collaborations while offering limited malpractice protections for doctors. Supporters say it improves rural prenatal care and home births, while critics warn of inadequate training for emergencies. Also a concurrent resolution urged Congress to fund continued health benefits for retired coal miners.
The Bluestone Hydropower Project in Hinton received a non federal sponsor designation the Hinton White Sulphur Springs Philippi Power Authority. Federal officials and area leaders announced the plan at Hinton Municipal Building noting benefits to the three cities. The 25.8 megawatt facility at Bluestone Dam will be financed with revenue bonds and interim funding from Anker Power Projects Inc while studies and developer selection proceed.

Jurors heard that Linda Sue Holbrook died from three blows of incredible force in June. Prosecutors allege Shiveley murdered Holbrook and stole her car in Mercer County Circuit Court. The defense claims Hill was set up while police traced a route to Galax and Roanoke before surrender.
County students presented methods to protect southern West Virginia water sources at the Southern Soil Conservation Speaking Contest in Bluewell. Keisha Hopkins of Bluewell Elementary won Division I for a frog themed act, Leah White of Glenwood Junior High topped Division II, and Nicole McMullin of Princeton High led Division III.
